Diagnosed With Osteopenia-Help

Hello All:

I'm hoping that someone out there can answer my question. I was

recently diagnosed with Mild Osteopenia. I'm almost 18 months out.

I'm sorry that I listened to my GYN. I went to her a couple of months

after surgery and she said that I should wait a year before having a

bone scan done. If I had listened to myself and not to her I would

have had the scan done. Then I would have known whether or not the

WLS surgery caused the condition. She called the other day to tell

me of the results and she didn't seemed fazed at all. I tried to

explain to her the ramifications of WLS and the malabsorption issue

but she said that for my age the condition is normal and that she

couldn't in good conscience prescribe anything for me. She also said

that I shouldn't have another scan done for at least 2 years. I

don't agree with her. I asked her what the numbers were and she said

the count on my hip was 1.2 and the count on my spine was 1.3. She

said they don't become alarmed until the count is 2.5. That's only 1

point away. I asked her if that wouldn't be too late and she said

no. I'm really worried about this. Am I being overly cautious or is

this Doctor just blind to the facts of WLS?

Any info anyone can give me about this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Roe

Blind, arrogant, and ignorant. And a doc who should be IMMEDIATELY replaced

by you with someone who will listen to your concerns.

In the meantime, do you take calcium supplements? Which one(s), what brand

and in what form? What exactly does the label say (dose, mgs, as what, etc)? Do

you do any weight-bearing exercises? You should start doing things NOW. In

fact, studies are finding that women need to actually start protecting

themselves

as early as their mid-20's in order to avoid osteoporosis -- whether WLS

post-ops or not.

May I suggest NOT getting treated for bone problems by a GYN?
