Guest guest
Metabolic Syndrome X is my disease as well. I think I should be their poster child! After worshipping the nutrition wisdom of the AHA and ADA during the reign of low-fat vegetarianism, I had 'dieted' my way up to 500#. Finally my PCP decided to check for insulin resistance (using a simple blood test for a fasting insulin level). Normal insulin levels should be around 15 - mine was 97! As soon as I changed my diet, the first 100# melted away. After my insulin level normalized, I was still ~400# and *hungry* (LOL!) for more weight loss success. Open distal RNY 22 mos ago is helping me get the rest off (-172# since surg and still losing). Metabolic Syndrome X includes problems with obesity, insulin sensitivity, high BP and lipids, uric acid levels, and PCOS (some references include this one, some don't). The AHA and ADA plans may work for some but what works for me is strict low carbs and my fabulous tool! ALL my X-symptoms are under control! Now what I can't control is all this empty, loose, hanging skin! ellen in TN > Vitalady says, > I have a fatal physical disease, probably called insulin resistance, or > Syndrome X, according to my latest article. Guest guest
Debbie, My heart goes out to your hubby. My hubby same thing about the weight gain and being a carb addict. Oh goodness it's so hard for these ppl who never had a weight problem really to all of a sudden start acquiring one later in their years. They do not know how to deal with it really...they never had to like you and me who lived it. When I met my hubby, his diet consisted of hostess dingdongs and milk and coffee. I'm NOT joking. I'm amazed he was not dead. Since I met him, it has taken 4 or 5 years to finally get him to realize to take protein first and to please drop the junk carbs to a few times a week instead of every meal. It's so hard, because he was soooo kind to me while I was having a weight issue. Never said a cross word to me while I was fat and loved me unconditionally. I find I have to pick and choose my words carefully so that they are supportive instead of judgemental or degrading. I have a mouth on me..LOL. I make sure now especially since I've lost all this weight, that he knows my advice is coming from love and I am not going anywhere like gonna leave him or anything if he doesn't change habits. When I get critical with him now in my mind, I remember how far he has come....his diet is so much better now. But it will take time for your hubby to change. But done in a positive loving way, I truly believe you can help him. I eventually ordered some protein samples from vitalady and got him excited to try them with me. I am not sure he was " excited " but he saw my excitement and he got a good laugh out of taste testing them with me. He found 2 he could stomach /cheer. So now he tries to grab atleast one a day. I mean if you told me he'd do that a few yrs ago, I'd have told you that you were nuts. One thing about normies, sometimes chocolate can give them heartburn I found out...read about it too on other websites. This is more of a vent about bad doctors than anything pertaining to your hubby (sorry I have to get this out cause it is sorta related): He does have a problem with his thyroid. He was on medication for years and years and then when he moved, they took tests and said he did not need thyroid medication. Now, c'mon....someone miraculously gets better on dingdongs? I can only conclude that his tests were borderline (he had to be tested 3 times with his one doc in NY and they finally found him to be deficient in his thyroid) and the California doc didn't say to himself..well gee, this person says they been taking thyroid medication for 10 years, just maybe the tests are not conclusive enough. So he then stopped taking his thyroid medication - they would not renew it. It's been over a year and guess what now? Well this is getting a little too personal but I'll just say...when you have endocrine problems, things can happen in the sex life that are not desireable. He's 35 too. So I noticed his weight gain. He's always been naturally trim. So I needled him to go back to the doc...again they say... " you do not need thyroid medication " . He's been very lethargic and what not and the weight gain is noticeable. This doc who said he did not need thyroid medication also shrugged his shoulders when my hubby told him of the sex life issue. Did he test him for testosterone? NO. I mean how many clues do you freakin have to have slapping your face as a doc on a patient: weight gain, sex life issues, lethargic, 10 yrs use of thyroid medication and be forced to just stop it one day, and all of this crap been going on since he been off that medication???? Coincidence? No. The doc told him he was just in the majority with other men his age and to run along. I was so angry when he came home and told me his doc's advice, I had to go to another room and beat up a pillow and cry. I am really pissed off that his doc is so non chalant about his issue which is OUR issue now. I've been on his backside for a few months now to get this fixed with his thyroid and have told myself, I will give him until first week of january to make another appointment with a new doc and not badger him until then. I am going to arm him with so much information on endocrine stuff that it's not funny, no doc is gonna be able to tell him he's imagining this or that he is normal! The bad thing is the more I keep reading, the more hatred I have for doctors that don't give a rip about troubleshooting their patients. These type of doctors do NOT care and just keep you coming in...not troubleshooting..just having you come in and pay each time..and they do nothing useful. Worthless.....so if you get a good doc, count your blessings...over and over please. Sherra RE: Syndrome X > This is an interesting topic. Guest guest
I think that this is one of the things that annoys me the most. It's the " all your problems are because you're fat " which then turns into " those problems are normal for your age " - I left a doctor because of the " age " comment - if they don't test, how do they know? I think it's malpractice in action, personally. Pam in Niceville Re: Syndrome X I am really pissed off that his doc is so non chalant about his issue which is OUR issue now. Dr. and many other doctors believe the Thyroid tests we do is useless most of the time. You never find a test to have such a wide range for normal reading. The reason is when they were trying to set the limits for normal, they got people who didn't know they had Thyroid problem along with normal people. So, unless you are extremely deficient in your Thyroid, the tests would show normal. What part of California do you live? I might have a good doctor for you. M. Guest guest
Thanks a ton, . I will read that website. I live in San , California. He is right now with kaiser, but he is changing first of the year to a plan that he can choose to go to an endocrinologist on his own and not have to worry about general doctor egos about passing their patients off to a specialist. Guest guest
Well it is interesting that you should mention chromium. My Dad (the resident Asperger herb/supplement expert) calls me up the other day to tell me that I NEED chromium so I am going to the health food store tomorrow to pick some up. Count me in as one of the 10 (or 20 as it is looking right now!) ~Kricket 298/138 > I messed with chromium for a year or so and didn't see that it did or > did not do anything, BUT, I never even kept track of the reactive > hypoglycemia. Guest guest
Debbie, is this since I saw you both in July? (the weight gain for your hubby?). Cause as I remember him in July, he looked just fine to me (as in no weight problem that I could see). But I do kinda know what you mean. My own dh is 6'4 " and he used to be 180 (before he quit smoking 6 years ago). He is now probably 215. I think he looks a lot better as he was rail thin at 180. But inwardly I do feel guilty as I have been cooking up a storm (mainly desserts) as my own selfish way to deal with the need to be around food (gotta stop that!). And my dear hubby cannot resist any of my fine cooking, LOL (last night I knocked him out with a Peach Sour Cream Pie that I whipped up). <sigh> My own fault I know! ~Kricket > This is an interesting topic.
