Does anyone know of a link between osteoporosis and jaw formation?

Difficulty healing because of it? I have osteoporosis and was wondering.

My sense is that unless you have specifically osteoporosis of the jaw

then you should be fine. your doctor might give you some added

supplements to take in preparation for surgery or during recovery.

However, my knowledge of osteo is very limited, only via my mother. You

might want to check out the following website if you haven't already

and certainly raise this concern with your doctors.

Joanne, I had osteoporosis, but am now osteopenic. My latest bone

density had decreased 3% in spine and 7% in hip. My OS told me to

stop the Fosamax because of the link (albeit only 7 cases of people

treated for osteoporosis) to osteoonecrosis of jaw. I had two

extractions about 2 years ago which healed ok. I'm not on any

biphospates until after the my surgery (June 23rd)- having upper and

lower jaw surgery plus additional work, too. When I'm finally healed

my endocrinologist wants me to go on Boniva (once a month dose), but

not until I get the OK from oral surgeon.

I will posting after my surgery, so will let you know how I heal.
