Guest guest
Pam Have you read over the information in our Group Files on dealing with candida/yeast while on SCD? Similar information can be found at www.pecanbread.com/f/how/yeast.html If you are dealing with high levels of candida, then it is advisable to make food choices to limit (or avoid for a while) the foods that yeast love, so you can kill them off faster. Honey and dried fruits are two of the foods that should be limited, or perhaps avoided, during a drastic yeast elimination phase. Some people need to be careful with all yeast “trigger” foods for a few months to a year, others find that they can continue to eat the trigger foods but just have to limit how often they consume them. There is much individual variation. Yeast will die off when their food sources are removed. Probiotics do help in stabilizing the gut ecology and bolstering the immune system so the body will more effectively fight off high levels of candida. Antifungals can help, of course, but aren’t required – and many times the antifungals cause side-effects and stress and damage. To get rid of high levels of candida/yeast, you need to deal with cutting off their food supply, improving the gut ecology so that digestion improves (again, cutting off the yeast food supply), and reducing the stress on the immune system so it can take over the task of keeping yeast in check. SCD helps with all of these issues, over time, but some of us find it helps to adjust our food choices to speed up the process [grin]. As to the illegal ingredients in Threelac. They would still have to be dealt with by the digestion even if the ingredients are supposed to target yeast. It isn’t helpful to continue to ingest ingredients that have an impact on the intestinal tract. That would just prolong the healing journey and might cause worsening damage. And there is no need to take a supplement with illegal ingredients when there are other choices that do less damage to the digestive system. There are plenty of antifungals that are OK to use while on SCD, if you feel they help (optional, though). S. Boulardii is a probiotic supplement that can be helpful in killing off candida (optional, though). You can adjust your food choices appropriately to limit the yeast triggers; you will be increasing your probiotics; and even more helpful, stabilizing and restoring the gut ecology, which helps reduce candida levels. Kim M. SCD 6 years Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction 6+ years neurological & spinal deterioration 3+ years >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> thanks, Kim and Marilyn, for your responses about threelac. I do have another question, though. If a person has mainly a candida issue, would he/she necessarily have to worry about " illegal " ingredients, given that the yeast is a fungus and needs to be targeted in a different way than other types of rogue bacteria? In other words, bacteria and fungus are two different things; would they not have to be treated differently with different probiotics? Another example would be that people following the SCD diet cannot have sugar, but they can eat honey. People with candida are not supposed to eat either because it feeds the yeast. Believe me, I am not going to embark on taking something which might cause harm to my system, but I don't think I have heard this addressed here. Thanks again for your helpful responses.
