Guest guest
-Im feeling the same way ,in need of real food, real soft food would even be nice , Ive been drinkin atkins protien shakes and it is'nt a great dining expierience,....I don't mind a Mcdonalds Milkshake for a treat, just make sure its chocolate or vanilla , I tryed a strawberry one last week which was immpossible (if your banded and splinted) It just acted as a strainer and clogged up my mouth with strawberry chunks and seeds,by the time that meal was over I was wearing most of it..... Rye and coke is nice too, in moderation I might add...... If you like beans of course. I buy all different kinds ie black, pinto, chick, peas, navy, kidney add spices and chicken broth to thin out. I bought a stick blender, $25.00 best money I've spent in a long time. I heat them just a bit to blend the flavors.Good protien and fiber plus they fill you up. Guest guest
I worry about the same thing...my son is having surgery in July - he's 17, an athlete, 6'2 and 175 lbs. I'm gathering ideas and products now trying to head off the boredom of the meals. One thing I found is that Carnation Instant Breakfast is available in cans. It is higher in sugar than Ensure or Boost, but that's not a concern for him. The vitamins and other nutrients are very comparable. I'm going to use the Vanilla flavor and add flavor extracts to change it up for him. I have found root beer, orange, peppermint, rum, coconut - I'm sure there are more. Also, more fiber. There are some that can be added to liquids that don't have any flavor. I'm not sure about it thickening before you can get it down - I'm working on that. It just seems that the focus is on protein and carbs and fiber isn't mentioned too much. It is filling and stays with you longer. If I'm able to find more info on it, I'll send it to you. Keep on healing! D bsk3282 wrote: I had my surgery a little over a week ago and so far everything has gone fine. However, by far the hardest thing has been getting enough calories. Guest guest
I wouldn't buy too much Carnation Instant Breakfast because at least for me, I was fine with Ensure/Boost for a couple of days but then just the smell of it made me want to vomit. I have heard this comment from other people as well. Even though, you buy different flavors it doesn't make that much of a difference. If he likes soup then you have plenty of options, and if he doesn't then I would also look at juices. I have found that juices are good. They may not have lots of calories, but at least they won't make you nausated. Just throwing in my opinon > I worry about the same thing...my son is having surgery in July - he's 17, > an athlete, 6'2 and 175 lbs. Guest guest
I've actually been really pleased with Carnation Instant Breakfast. I use the powder in the morning to make smoothies (I add frozen fruit, yogurt, and milk). I bring a can of Carnation Instant Breakfast to work for my lunch (plus a can of V8 juice). I'm not bored yet...for my breakfast smoothies I add different types of fruit, and the three choices I have at lunch (chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry) are boring but at least filling enough to get me through the afternoon. For dinner I make a big bowl of soup (I like soup, so this is not a problem). Not the canned soup...usually these don't taste so good blended. Last night, however, I discovered that tamales are a perfect " soft food. " Tamales are easily mashable and are a nice change from soup! I am almost six weeks post-op, so soft foods are now an option for me. Just my two cents! Willa > > I had my surgery a little over a week ago and so far everything has > > gone fine. Guest guest
You can also blend in some cheese sauce, as long as you keep it thin enough.... Guest guest
Folks, didn't your doctors tell you NO FRUITS WITH SEEDS FOR AT LEAST THE FIRST WEEK!?! The seeds get stuck in between your teeth and braces and make keeping your mouth clean a nightmare. I got a list yesterday from my docs of what I could and could not eat during the first week and strawberries, kiwis, raspberries and blackberries were all off limits for the first week as were raw eggs (this was not as obvious to me). I would say that you can liquidize almost anything in the blender (although I'm not guaranteeing that it will taste good for sure) if you add enough milk or water to water it down. If you want something salty try blenderized carrots with a little bit of cream and milk to liquify. Or Vichyoisse or Gazpacho soups are excellent cold soups that can be an alternative to the standard boring soups. Or take your favorite cookies, throw them into the blender with milk and blend well. Strain if necessary. Nice mushy treat. I'll try to think of some more interesting recipes for a liquid diet. I am dreading the whole protein shake drinking part of the liquid diet. Keep up the good progress guys! Sara > > I had my surgery a little over a week ago and so far everything has > > gone fine. However, by far the hardest thing has been getting > enough > > calories. Guest guest
I have to say that pineapple does not work too well either. When blended, it tends to just turn into tiny shreds that get stuck all over the place, and before you know it, you can't drink anything (if you are wired shut). > > > I had my surgery a little over a week ago and so far everything > has > > > gone fine.
