Guest guest
A book I really enjoyed, " The Gift of Fear " , talks about using fear to our advantage because it is a gift - a sort of message from the subconscious that says " something is out of kilter, pay attention " . It's been a long time since I've read it so I'm probably not spinning it exactly as it was written but one of the message that I got from it is to listen to that little voice - you know, the one that you hear when you also notice that the hair on the back of your neck is standing up? The author asserts that usually there are often valid causes/reasons - clues or cues that we might not consciously immediately recognize - that cause that hair to stand up. Lest it sound like the book encourages living in a constant state of near panic, unless I'm totally misremembering, he talks about learning how to identify the clues so that we act appropriately to the risk and so therefore we DON'T panic, but we also don't ignore the messages. I read the book after my house had been robbed several times, a coworker had been raped and beaten and left for dead, another coworker was murdered, etc. etc. etc. And the book actually helped me reduce my level of paranoia. Yes, I also moved to an area with a lower overall crime level. :-) I think I may need to track down a copy and read it again.
