Guest guest
I now have to deal with weight gain [sigh]. I just looked into this issue, as it was discussed in the nutrition class I just finished and I was putting together a “lean carb SCD” page for the pecanbread website. There is a basic physiological or metabolic fact that we can’t get around. We will gain weight if we are consuming more calories than our bodies requires for functioning and our varying levels of physical activity. Our bodies need a certain amount of calories just to maintain basic functioning. When we add physical activity then our calorie intake needs to increase to compensate, or our bodies start to utilize the fat reserves. Of course our digestions have to be able to absorb the necessary nutrients first, so digestive disorders play a role in weight loss or weight gain. But, in the end, if we consume more calories than our bodies require, the extra is stored in fat tissues. There are some other metabolic processes that impact weight gain or loss, so it is complex. And age also has a role to play. Yes, we are eating healthy foods on SCD, but we still can eat more calories-worth of food than our body can utilize, given our level of physical activity. In my first five years on SCD I didn’t care about calorie intake. I just focused on getting my digestion functioning. I lost weight for a few years (which I needed to lose), then I stopped losing but didn’t gain, and now I have gained some weight. So I’m working to get back down to the weight that is right for me. It is frustrating since I don’t eat the high-carb, high-fat SCD foods, but I don’t exercise as much as I should given my neuromuscular issues which makes things difficult and challenging. It is always something [sigh]. Kim M. I don't understand though why weight gain would become such an issue given how balanced and healthy this way of eating is. Can anyone explain this?
