Guest guest
Hi there; By all means, tell the anethesiologist about your recreational drug use. It's YOUR health and he/she MUST know. All the best with your surgery. Guest guest
you should have told them that during your pre-admin testing session. didn't they ask you " have you taken any drugs including cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy in the last month? " . Damn right you should tell them that tomorrow! If something goes wrong they need to be 100% aware of what substances you might have in your body. As a side note however, not sure if any one was aware of this, but the anestesiologist to get the tubes down your nose actually sprays a cocaine based substance to numb the area and shrink the tissues. At least this is what my OS told me they did to me. Either way, tell your doctors about the cocaine and without wanting to come across as a preaching freak STOP DOING the substance! I'm 27 and have already lost 2 friends to cocaine. As for throwing up try to relax if and when it does happen. If you're wired shut the vomit will come through the openings that are left in your mouth between the teeth and through your nostrils. Sounds grosse I know. I was glad that it didn't happen to me. If the vomiting gets really bad they will cut your wires. They will in fact send you home with a pair of clippers to cut the wires in case of emergency. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi! I hope you are getting this message in time before your surgery. I had surgery 2 and a half weeks ago. I too was nervous about being wired and nausea. The best thing to do in this case is talk to your surgeon and anesthesiologist. Ask them if you will be wired. Ask them what will happen if you are nauseous. Tell them you are concerned about nausea, and ask if they can give you something during surgery to help with it. In terms of snorting cocaine, I would mention it. Doctors deal with all kinds of things. I doubt this will be shocking for your anesthesiologist. Perhaps it will not have any effect, but if you don't know, might as well ask. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow! let us know how it all works out. Oh...and no blow for a while after the surgery, okay? I had a lefort (one peice) and struggled with nose bleeds for the first week and a half after surgery. Let us know how it all works out, okay? Guest guest
I dont mean to sound like an ass here but you 'heard from a friend of a friend...yadda yadda' that they didnt tell the doctor about a foriegn chemical they took and they came out fine... thats some shadey sourcing on that info... I wouldnt tell somone they will be fine because a friend of a friend happened to be fine after taking cocaine and not telling the doctor. FOR THE TROUBLE IT WILL CAUSE YOU PRE OP TELL THE FRIGGIN' DOCTOR... is it really worth the possibility of complications that could have been possibly quite easily prevented by telling them!? Sheesh... sry... off on a rant! kristie bartoe wrote: Hello, I just had jaw surgery 2 wks agao at Baylor Hospital, I was concerned about having my mouth wired shut and throwing up but I told my anestiologist Sp bad I had a sensitive stomach and pain pills make me throw up and he gave a different medicine so I wouldn't get sick! Guest guest
, I second everything you said. Seriously people, this is YOUR LIFE your putting into ur doctor's hand. Wouldn't you want him to be fully prepared in case something went wrong?! Arrrggghhh. Wake up. This wouldn't be the first or last time that your doctor deals with someone who has done drugs. Better that he know. Guest guest
I agree completely. And that includes herbal supplements and health food products, too. Actually, I think some ORs use a bit of cocaine on long q-tips to numb the nose for the insertion of the tubes. But I still think it's important that your doc know about anything and everything that's going on in your body. I'd have been inclined to tell mine if I'd had an ingrown toenail, not that i thought it would make any difference. Guest guest
Good luck tomorrow~ Good thoughts to you! For the possiblity of vomiting, be ready to use your fingers to pull your lips and cheeks out as gently, as wide as possible. Relax your lips and cheeks, don't fight it - it will find a way out! As for your *recreational indulgence* YES anything that will mix with a medication should be " out in the open " . At least in the chart or in the ear of the ones that need to know. You could be seriously compromising your health or recovery. With the new privacy laws, you are very protected. Wishing you the best ~D > hello, > > 28 male here going into surgery tomorrow at 7 am, a 3 piece something, > bone will be taken out of my hip as well. surgery will be about 6hrs. > > there's just a couple of concerns i have going in: > > one is the possibility of having to be wired shut and then having to > throw up while wired shut. Guest guest
Hi Txstoke. Is your concern about mentioning the use of cocaine that your state has an automatic reporting law? Our state has a law that if anyone who is underage, or who is a parent with custody of underage children, reports to their physician or healthcare provider that they have been or are currently using street drugs, there is an automatic requirement to report this abuse to state agencies by the physician or healthcare provider. It is considered putting dependent children at risk, and that is considered abuse. Children can be removed from the home for this type of admission. I am sure you are already aware that your actions can have serious consequences in many forms. If this is your concern, simply ask them when they put the question to you, that if you relay information implying that you had used street drugs, if that information will be reported to any agency. Simply asking this question is not an admission that you have used street drugs. If they are required to report this, you could ask to have your surgery postponed until it would be completely out of your system. You could ask them a hypothetical-case question. Such as, " If I had used cocaine 2 weeks ago, and did not further use it before surgery, would that impact how I am able to use anesthesia or post op medication?? " Then they can respond positively or negatively. If they say it would, you could ask how long it would take for that drug to be safely out of your system prior to surgery. This still is not a statement of admission that you have used them. You may then need to postpone the surgery until your system is clean, by telling them that you do not want to proceed with the surgery. Many people postpone surgery for many different reasons. You will have to decide - if there are risks - what explanation you will give to postpone the procedure. But do NOT simply neglect to tell them or put it into open consideration AND still procede with the surgery. Please do not make a bad situation worse by possibly risking your life to cover-up a bad decision. I wish you luck with this. If you are able to safely proceed, I wish you a great surgery, an uneventful recovery, and great results. I am concerned for you, and hope you will take the steps necessary to keep yourself safe and prepared for your surgery and outcome. Please post when you are able to do so post op. There is a lot of great information here to help you through the recovery process. Hugs, Fran > hello, > > 28 male here going into surgery tomorrow at 7 am, a 3 piece something, > bone will be taken out of my hip as well. surgery will be about 6hrs. > > there's just a couple of concerns i have going in: > > one is the possibility of having to be wired shut and then having to > throw up while wired shut.
