Guest guest
Stacey, I'll see your evil stepmother and raise you...an actual, biological mother. When I'd lost over 100 lbs., I had a call from my mother's doctor, who basically told me that if I wanted to see Mum before she expired from the effects of her lifelong alcoholism, I should get my tushie out to the west coast tout de suite. I boarded a plane the next day. Walked into Mum's hospital room, where she was sitting in a chair, actually looking quite chipper for someone who was about to die. She greeted me with a smile, but (and this still amazes me!) said NOT A SINGLE WORD about my weight loss. My dear aunt, Mum's younger sister, said, " Shirley, doesn't look great? " Mum looked me up and down with her usual critical eye, and said, " I suppose so. " Stacey, I think there are people in our lives who, for whatever reason, just cannot accommodate the idea that anyone else has achieved anything significant. My mother was always one of those people. She shut herself off from people in the last year of her life, and when she did die (about 10 days after my arrival), the only people who showed up at her memorial gathering came because they'd known my father. Mum died as she lived: a bitter, sad shell of a person. I can't say anything about your stepmother since I don't know her, but I can tell you that I have come to feel sad for people who just can't seem to extend themselves beyond their own insecurities. It's no way to live. Sometimes all you can do is laugh, huh?
