Guest guest
First let me THANK everyone who trims before they send a reply to the list. For those of us who get it in digest form it makes it much more readable. Second.....I'm scheduled for surgery on 6/22 here in Austin, Texas by my OS Dr. Voorhees. We are in high gear; on June 6th I've got an appt with the ortho to have more rigid wires put on, then again on 6/ 20 for my " hooks " . See the OS on June 6th for new impressions and then twice more prior to surgery. The OS office told me I would be discharged on 6/24 and that's about all I know right now! I've go a severe overbite (couldn't see my lower teeth at all prior to my braces. Been in braces since 9/04. Having my lower jaw advanced and my OS uses rubber bands? rather than wires? So, What should I ask my OS when I see him next? Thanks, Connie
Guest guest
There's a list of FAQs on Fiddlesticks' geocities sites. Another, I'm thinking, in the files or the links here. But mainly, if you've read around on this site, you probably know what's worrying you. Anything about cosmetic or dental changes? Anything about the recovery, length of time you'll have/won't have a splint, whether you may eat/use a straw, etc? What warning things to watch out for. Whether you may use a waterpik, and if so, how to do it. What he expects in re: swelling and numbness, duration, intensity. Your ability to speak clearly post op. Whether or not he wants you to try to talk. How tightly you'll be banded... etc., etc. Anything you shouldn't do? And for how long shouldn't you do it? You may also want to have a blow by blow description of the procedures you'll be aware of (or those you won't). I didn't expect to have to take TWO showers between 12:01 and 6 a.m., including shampooing with surgical soap, for example. Will you be cared for by nurses who are aware of these procedures and experienced in caring for patients who are post-op from his orthognathic procedures. Will you be in some sort of intensive care, or will you be on a ward. will someone readily get you ice, pain stuff, whatever -- or will you be at the mercy of a button you push and a speakerphone. My guy had all this worked out, most excellently, and to a t. Hope yours will, too. Should you have your own caregiver with you (hubby, mother, sister, friend, paid nurse, etc.)?? Some folks have found this most helpful. And what about after you go home? For how long, and how much care? How much should you move around post-op, and how soon?
