Guest guest
Afternoon everyone. I think I'm finally over the flare - fingers crossed. I had a quick question to anyone who suffers from eczema. For years I dealt with the DH rash on my right arm that often accompanies Celiac disease. Once I went gluten free that stopped being an issue, but then my hand started to get all red and then itchy/scaly. After figuring out Celiac wasn't the only problem I started SCD (now going on 3 1/2 months) - and my hand got worse while on the flare. It seems to be calming down a little, but not much. Has anyone with eczema notice it start to go away while on SCD? If so, how long did you have to wait it out? I can't use any of the topical cream stuff - it all makes it worse for me - of course. I try both petroleum jelly and coconut oil and wear a glove overnight, though it's only a quick fix. It has never been as bad as while I was flaring. Thanks in advance! ~Ann
Guest guest
My eczema got a lot worse at the beginning of SCD, especially behind my knees and inside my elbows (hadn't been bothered there since I was a kid). I took epsom salt baths regularly, which really helped. I'd say it took a few months for it to get better. As for the eczema on my hands (been a problem my whole life), I believe the first time in completely cleared up was at 8 months. Since then, I have had a minor breakout here and there. So long as I jump on it immediately and apply a prescription cream once or twice a day, I can nip it in the bud. But if I don't do anything, it starts to creep out and expand. I currently have a tiny patch at the top of my pinky that I'm treating, but other than that, my hands are great! All in all, I think SCD has done a good job of eliminating the bulk of my eczema problems. Now if I can just figure out why my legs have broke out in a horrible case of keratosis pilaris. They look (and feel) absolutely horrible! Holly Crohn's SCD 12/01/08 > > > Afternoon everyone. I think I'm finally over the flare - fingers > crossed. Guest guest
Ann Not that I want to bring gloom to your day [grin] but my experience has been that my eczema (arms) has improved considerably since being on SCD but my dermatitis and contact dermatitis on my hands has not. I remember noticing the eczema on my arms had almost disappeared at the end of my 2nd year; didn’t really pay attention when it vanished completely. That was the point where my candida overgrowth had been eliminated, and my gut ecology was improving steadily. I have the same issues with topical ointments and lotions not working on my hands; I have to use petroleum jelly fairly often, wear rubber gloves when I clean or wash dishes, prepare fruits for juicing, and so on. My hands can’t take repeated wetting or handling fruits. That helps with the contact dermatitis, but the other dermatitis I deal with is triggered by other factors. Fruits and veggies high in vitamin C can trigger flares, so I’m careful. Also physiological stress from things such as die-off, antibiotic use, migraines, and too much physical activity can trigger a dermatitis flare as well. You may not be dealing with dermatitis; I hope not. If it is just eczema, then time on SCD should help considerably. Kim M. Guest guest
Hey Ann :)SCD can help eczema alot, but I just wanted to let you know that sometimes eczema can be complicated or from a few different sources. Classic chinese medicine often generally attributes it to internal organ disregulation, (I believe mainly the liver?), which of course is often a problem with IBD anyways and SCD can clear it up. Also, however, skin problems can be vitamin A deficiency related, which is an issue for IBDers because I understand they are often prone to vitamin A deficiency (especially if not or if pre-SCD), and I've heard that they are prone to problems converting beta-carotene into vitamin A, so that they are more prone to deficiency anyway and that such deficiency needs to be corrected not with beta-carotene, i.e. preferably animal source i.e. retinol. Actually, about 7 months ago before I got really really sick again, I surfaced up at my doctors with bad skin problems on my hands that he diagnosed as eczema and wrote off (he said just try not to get your hands wet). No help at all. Now I know that that was the beginning of bad warning signs that I was having trouble, and soon after developed bad liver trouble, then discovered that I had a terribly bad sub-clinical vitamin A deficiency. Anyways, the vitamin A has been helping my skin alot, and I'm taking a capsule along with extra (wet) vitamin D drops (you need to supplement vitamin D in a 2:1 ratio A:D when supplementing A) Vitamin A you have to be careful with, toxicity is possible and undesirable, I wouldn't recommend supplementing it willy nily. I just wanted to let you know that it might be a factor. Anyways, best wishes!!p.s. I found minor helpful relief using Aubrey Organics unscented ultimate moist lotion (its good stuff, especially when you really rub it in). I wouldn't recommend petroleum jelly, just in general petroleum products on the skin aren't the best idea.. I'm sure there must be a far better ointment concoction than just lotion for eczema but honestly I haven't really looked into it Afternoon everyone.
