Guest guest
Dawn, You have a great attitude! I wish my brain operated more like yours. I consider you a true runner, someone who is out there just for the enjoyment of the sport. That's totally awesome that you feel like running helps you! And it sounds like you're really good about listening to your body which is probably key. Trail running always sounded pretty fun. I have a good friend who does trail ultras- 50 milers, and she loves them for the reason you said. It's totally different in that you don't care about pace or time. Too funny about pooing in the woods!! I've only run on the trails out here once, but it was a lot of fun, and the time goes by faster than on the road. Though you couldn't pay me enough to do an ultra marathon, pre or post Crohns! I agree, I think distance evens would be challenging with the SCD. Definitely doable, but not as easy as people who can just rely on Gatorade which is what I did when I was running. Sounds like you have a good plan though. And you're so right about leaving the Garmin at home. Man, all this talk about running is really making me miss it. I guess mostly because now I feel like that's what my life was before Crohn's. It would be nice if I could get some of it back. We'll see. When you get back into it, run a few miles for me! Earlier on this board, there was discussion of running making you flare. I got a bit worried about it affecting me. > > > > After my initial diagnosis I got better enough and started running again. But then I would have my symptoms act up, so I would back off. It got to the point where I hated to have to start over each time with running, since it's one of those things you really have to build on slowly. I'm really bad about pushing myself too hard with running, because I check my pace too much. I'd probably be OK if I just ran comfortably...maybe. But realistically I don't think I'll ever be able to do another marathon without suffering serious consequences. And I definitely don't think I could put in as much training as I would need to be even close to the times I was at before. I don't know, never say never, I guess, but I'm trying to be realistic. > > > > Did you find your UC affected how much you could train as compared to before you got sick? When you upped your mileage, did you notice any increase in your UC symptoms? > > > > Good for you for not letting the disease take it away from you! I'm just trying to find what works for me. Realistically I could probably run for fun, but I don't ever expect myself to be able to run the pace I did before I got sick. > > > > Amber >
