Question about cleaning helmet

I would say absolutely do not use anything other than rubbing alcohol to

clean the band. The liner of the band is porous so any water or other

cleaning solution will get absorbed into it. It might feel dry but it

really isn't and then the water will slowly eek back out and cause skin

problems with the moisture sealing against skin. Worse yet, there can be

skin irritation and skin " burns " from baking soda, soap, etc. that the

sensitive skin of some infants just can't take. Rubbing alcohol

evaporates. It isn't to protect the liner so much as to protect the

infant's skin.

Wet a soft cloth with the alcohol and vigorously wipe out the entire inside

of the band once a day when you remove the band for your baby's bath. This

will help prevent bacteria from building up on the inner liner and will

reduce the odour that is sometimes present. Make sure the alcohol is

completely dry before placing the band back on the baby's head. If you live

in a sunny climate, place the band in the sun after cleaning it to help it

dry. The baby's head should be washed daily with a mild baby shampoo that

will not hurt the eyes. Aveeno shampoo or Tea tree oil shampoo can soothe

some scalp irritations that can occasionally occur because of heat build-up

and perspiration inside the band. You can also try a fruity smelling

shampoo by L'oreal or Suave to wash your child's hair and then you are left

with a nice scent afterwards.

Question about cleaning helmet

We just got our daughter's DOC band this week. We are wondering (we will

call CT tomorrow) if there is anything we can clean the band with in

addition to alcohol. (Something with a nice smell like soap....) Although I

have been cleaning it everyday with alcohol, it already has a funky smell if

I sniff it :)

Thanks!

Like others said, don't use anything but alcohol and also don't rub TOO hard. Your specialist wants to see the markings (really it's the funky stains) to see where the band is/is not hitting so adjustments can be made.We also blowdry our gal's hair before putting the band on (of course on the low temp setting) and also blow the helmet. After we started doing that the smell factor was significantly reduced.Tracey

Make sure you are using the 90 percent alcohol. It's a huge improvement over the 70 percent. I once tried a 98 percent solution, but it was too strong. The 90 percent worked great. Also, when it was at it's worst, I would clean it twice a day. The alcohol dries quickly so if you are quick about it, you can get the helmet back on in 15 mintues for an extra cleaning.

We were told nothing but rubbing alcohol. It might help if you take the band

off twice a day and clean it (i.e. 1/2 hr in the morning, 1/2 hr in the evening,

for example.) We often took her helmet off twice a day to air out, but couldn't

get cleaning it twice into our schedule. However, you will get a little more

used to the smell, and your daughter's head will get more used to the helmet so

it won't sweat as bad after a few weeks. We have a StarBand and they were able

to drill some airholes that REALLY helped. I'm not sure if you can do that with

a DOC band though. Also, we used a nice smelling shampoo on her head, but we

did see that her scalp dried out a little bit from it.

I currently have the same Ortho as Molly used. In addition to alcohol, my Ortho

recommends Purell sanitizer so that's what we've used. We found it does a good

job of removing that stink and adds a nice smell. I just use my fingers to rub

it in so I don't remove those dirt marks the Ortho uses to see where the helmet

is touching.

Thanks! Maybe we will try that. But we've already noticed such an improvement w/the smell by using the 91% alcohol, sometimes doing it 2x a day (when I do AM stretches) and the blowdryer on a low setting.
