Okay group,

Another question from another friend. She's having trouble with the size of

the calcium citrate pills and hates the chewables. In speaking to her

pharmacist, he told her that the carbonate in viactiv was " fine because it

goes into viactiv as liquid so is absorbed right away. " Any truth to this

as you all know it? I told her I'd still stick to my citrate if I were

her...

Deb,

I am certainly no expert on Calcium but I can tell you what my primary doc

told me. He is no expert on WLS but his specialty is osteoporosis and its

prevention. He says EVERY woman should be taking Calcium Citrate and as far

as he is concerned he wishes that they would take Calcium Carbonate off the

market because many woman do not realize they are not getting what they

need.

How far out of surgery is your friend? Can she crush her pill and add it to

something like applesauce or something.

Deb,

Unfortunately, that pharmacist is full of crap. Carbonate is carbonate,

and it requires one hour of exposure to stomach acid to be at all

bioavailable to anyone. That means it's not going to work for us

post-op. All One makes a powdered calcium citrate that has no taste. You

can sprinkle it on food, mix it into protein shakes, etc. 1.5 teaspoons

of it contains 500 mg calcium as citrate and 250 mgs of elemental

magnesium. You still need to add Vitamin D to that mix, but it's a great

start. http://www.all-one.com/supplements/calciumpowder.htm

That's how I feel, also. I'm not convinced that carbonate is any more

absorbable than sheet rock. Sure, it'll test postive for calcium in a lab,

but that does not make it absorbable to a human.

People have sent me carbonate products to give away and I wont' even let my

(normie) staff have them. I think they're dangerous.
