Guest guest
My name is Crystal, I'm 17, and I'm having my lower jaw lengthened on August 6th. I'm gonna be a senior this year and I play bass clarinet, and I'm concerned about how long it will take me to start playing again to audition for All Honors/State, and more importantly, college auditions. Any woodwind players here who have had jaw surgery can tell me about their experiance, and about how long they couldn't play (I will be wired for 4 weeks, if that helps). Thanks in advance! Guest guest
Hi Crystal, my name is Val and I'm 18 and also play the bass clarinet. I don't know how much I can help you out because I am only 18 days post op (I also had my lower jaw extended) but I was planning on taking a while off because if you think about it, having your jaw in a new position changes your whole ombiture and so I am predicting for myself that I will pretty much have to re-learn how to play. I am definitely taking the first quarter off (I go to UCSD and play in the wind ensemble there) and possibly the second. But these are just guesses. Definitely ask your OS when you can start playing and stuff because although they might not understand the mechanics behind it and stuff the last thing you want to do is play before your jaw is healed. There aren't many bass clarinet players out there - awesome instrument isn't it? Anyway I don't know if my post will help so hopefully we have another wind player in the group that is farther along than me. Guest guest
Bass clarinet is an awesome instrument! I wish I had my own, instead of having to play on school instruments. This is just a bad time to have this surgery, but I don't have much of a choice, I wanted to do it while losing the least amount of time in school. A reason I wanted to have this surgery is because I think it would help my embouchure. Right now I get sore after playing awhile. Anyways, thanks for the help! > > My name is Crystal, I'm 17, and I'm having my lower jaw lengthened on > > August 6th. Guest guest
Crystal, Yeah I am lucky and have my own instrument. I actually just started playing junior year of high school, I played flute before that and then decided that I preferred the lower sounds so I pretty much randomly picked the bass clarinet (lol) but I love it. I also had a problem with soreness after I play for long periods of time so hopefully that is solved too. I talked to my OS about playing and he said that as far as the jaw muscles and stuff are concerned I could start as soon as I can open my mouth that wide although it might not be a good idea because my lower lip is numb and I could be putting too much pressure on it and stuff. Also, like I said before, it will definitely take some getting used to playing with a new jaw. But yeah just ask - and let me know what your OS says too! Guest guest
Hello! Not to scare you or anything, I play saxophone and have been told that I can't play any wind instrument for a year! Ask your os... Suzy > > > My name is Crystal, I'm 17, and I'm having my lower jaw lengthened on > > > August 6th.
