Guest guest
Mitch, one of the things about the Pred weight gain is that it's not just overall weight gain, like an average person might get. One of my docs described it as a "redistribution of fat," especially to the middle. That's why so many of us end up with thick middles & skinny limbs when we do manage to lose most of the weight. We do get the moon face; you can see it in this photo of me at my Pred peak--my lips & eyes almost disappeared. I had gained 90# on Pred at that point. I eventually lost about 70 of it over several years, then gained 30 back. But even after losing 70# & getting a thinner face & limbs, I still had a thick torso! The 2nd photo is from Oct. & you can see that although my face is thinner, along with my arms & legs, but I have no waist; actually I have 3 rolls in my middle, including what's been called "the subcontinent." And of course, that's the worst place to carry extra weight as far as heart attacks, etc. I think that the Pred not only causes a redistribution of fat, but that a different type of fat develops, that is more resistant to weight loss. Add that to the fatigue & other issues associated with sarc that make it difficult to exercise, and bingo! If you go to the NS website, which is listed at the bottom of this & all other group messages, click on photos & look through those pics, you'll see that a number of us have been brave enough to post before & after-Pred photos. I actually have a little collage of the changes. I don't know if any of this will help your wife understand, but maybe she will at least be more sympathetic & accepting. Sometimes we just need to accept things we don't understand. I really don't understand how a photo can travel over a telephone line by fax, but I know that it does! I always get ice tea with the ice on the side (get strange looks all the time) and I just add in a little ice at a time. I need everyones help that has had this problem with prednisone. I've been having problems with my wife trying to get her to understand what and how the weight gain works. Maybe I'm being too technical but I've gained 50 pounds in the 4 years I've been on it. My normal dose is 10 mg but whenever I start to have an episode I go up to 40mg and down by 10 every 4-10 days depending on how bad it is. I get cravings or just eat the same foods. I can't explain it to her in a way she understands as to why I can't lose the weight and why I eat the way I do. Since being so sick the last 4 weeks I've been stopping off 4-5 times a week and buying large Wonton soups. I call it Chinese Chicken Soup. It's the only thing that seems appetizing and the only thing I want to eat. I go through cycles but can stay with the same foods for weeks or months and have a hard time eating the way I know I should and preach people to,. But the Prednisone is the worst drug I've ever been on. help me explain it to her so she understands please. G-d Bless Mitch Re: Hello? Hello?
