I had a positive SIBO breath test in April and my doctor put me on Xifaxan for 14 days. About four days in, I had a bad day with diarrhea (which usually I had been backed up, so D not typical for me) and some blood (also not typical for me). During that time I also read Pimentel's book and BTVC. I started the SCD during my course of Xifaxan. So not sure whether it was die off from starting the diet or the med, but my body felt really strange during that time--tingling in extremities, light headed. I also began to have a pressure in my lower left rib cage and bleeding that was still present a couple months after. They took me off of it 4 days early. Slowly that pressure has improved but is still noticeable at times. Bleeding finally gone and turned out to be internal hemorrhoids caused by that bad day of D. If I had it to do over, I wish I had just started the diet and skipped the Xifaxan. I have been on SCD for 3 mos now and am feeling better than I have felt in years. I suspect it would have taken care of the bacterial infection by itself, but cannot know for sure at this point. I don't know what your diagnosis is or whether that is helpful for you, but I will hope so! :)

Anyone use Xifaxin? I was on it a couple of weeks ago with pretty good results while I was on it. After I came off it abt a week later symptoms returned. Doc put me back on at double the dosage and I hade a bad reaction so he took me off. I am going to see him tomorrow and would like to discuss putting me back on it at the lower dose.

Does anyone have experience with Xifaxin?

Thanks,

Lynn

My experience probably won't help much. I was on it for one week six years ago,

to help diminish bloating in my small intestine. Worked great, and was the

easiest (on my body) antibiotic I've ever taken.

Not sure if a long-term course of an antibiotic is a good idea, even if Xifaxan

is one of the better ones in terms of side-effects. Something for you to

discuss with your doctor.

Have you had stool tests revealing a bacterial or other type of microorganism

overgrowth? If you're dealing with diarrhea, which Xifaxin usually helps with,

then you might be dealing more with C. Diff instead of E. Coli.

At any rate, remember to follow the antibiotic protocol when you're taking them.

Push the probiotics but wait 2 to 3 hours after an antibiotic dose before taking

it. And stick to soft, easy-to-digest foods during the antibiotics and for a

month or two afterwards, since your gut ecology will need to rebuild.
