Guest guest
I take Lexapro for depression, not for anxiety. I have been taking it for a little over a year now. I had been taking Celexa but supposedly there are less side effects from Lexapro. Right now I am going through a lot of stress and for anxiety my doctor has prescribed Xanax. That has really helped the anxiety. It does make me sleepy but I take it when I can rest. I have found that if I take 1/2 a Xanax I don't get as sleepy with it either. I am a firm believer in trying to use non-medicinal approaches too. For the depression I do believe in light therapy. I have noticed that I am worse in the winter (seasonal affective disorder) but that wasn't explaining why I was also bad sometimes in the summer ... until we realized that I was staying inside in the air conditioning when it was very hot and not getting exposed to sunlight. The sunlight is very helpful to me. And of course the dirty word ... hehehehe. I call it dirty because it is the thing I am most resistant toward ... EXERCISE ...helps everything. Just like drinking water does. I also listen to tapes. I have some excellent stress relieving tapes and also some for depression. Right now because I am going to have major surgery on Sept 16 I am listening to prepare for surgery tapes. I love falling asleep to these self-hypnosis type tapes. I have been on antidepressants for quite a while and have learned a few things. We are all different. What works for one does not work for someone else. For example I am one of those odd balls that gets super depressed when I take Prozac. I have learned too that my body develops a tolerance of some antidepressants and then I need to switch to another kind after a while. For me, it has been worth it to pay the extra to go to a psychiatrist for my prescriptions rather than my primary care. There is a special code they send it saying that I am going for prescriptions ...not counseling and my insurance pays 80 percent of the cost and I go for a 15 min. visit. In general, most antidepressants take about 2 weeks to build up into your system. Good luck. These are the things that work for me. I am not saying it works for anyone else. A couple months ago, I was switched from Prozac to Lexapro - but my libido didn't return. It's been a long time since I had a libido, but I'm pretty sure I'd recognize it if it came back!
