Re: Why use two bands?

Hi-

There are a couple of reasons someone might choose to go with the two-band

option (I assume you mean Cranial Tech?). The first is reputation...I chose to

go to CT because I felt confident in their reputation and success and because my

son was older, would have rather him wear 2 bands from CT than 1 STARBand from

another provider that I didn't have confidence in. Tied to that is insurance, if

CT is in network (or even in my case out of network but would still be partially

covered), it might be an easier decision to go with 2 bands if they will both be

paid for (in part or whole). Also, getting a new band custom made to fit the

current head shape can be more effective than wearing the same worn out band for

longer (my son had the most improvement in the first 2 weeks of both of his new

bands - there is a definite difference in strength/stability in a brand new band

compared to one 4-6 months old).

And lastly, if it's your closest option. If you live closer to a Cranial Tech

than another helmet provider, it makes sense to go to them because they are the

leader in the field (I've heard of people travelling far and wide to go there -

I drove almost 3 hours each way,- but I've never heard of anyone bypassing CT to

go to a further STARBand or Hanger provider).

Also, two bands are only needed when the plagio/brachy is severe enough and the

baby is young enough (he may outgrow the first one before the job is done),

typically 1 is enough, but it's good that they were up front with you.

I would just be sure that your other option that will only use one band is a

qualified and experienced ortho that deals with plagio a lot. CT therapists are

all equally and routinely trained, where as you really have to do your research

and ask questions of other band orthos because they are not

regulated/trained/overseen by the band companies they use. If you post your

location/ortho, perhaps someone on the board has used them and can give you

their experience.

For me personally the decision wasn't based off if the company could get the job

done with one band or two, it was based off the proximity of the companies, the

quality of the bands, the quality of the service and expertise. After much

reading I felt best about Cranial Tech, although I know some people have good

experiences with other companies. But if you read on this group, you will

certainly read about companies that wouldn't be advised. After graduating, I

still 110% stand behind CT!

I felt more comfortable with the DOC band and their staff at cranial tech.

Also, our insurance covers 80% of the insurance negotiated rate which comes out

to about $300 per band. That isn't hard on the wallet. Additionally, after all

of my research, I decided that the DOC band was the best option for us. I guess

it comes down to our experience and results and not the cost. Good luck!
