Why do you have to give it up? There's nothing wrong with something sweet after

dinner. Just try and pick something low in sugar and carbs.

Kathy,

I work at silencing that voice in my head that keeps telling me that I

can " never eat that again " because, for me, that message seems to be a trigger;

the next thing you know that particular " can't eat that ever again " food is in

my thoughts constantly. The risk of a binge in my future becomes more real by

the minute. For me - and I know that EACH OF US IS DIFFERENT - moderation

rather than complete avoidance is usually more liveable and more workable.

Chocolate is a weakness for me so I buy the best quality chocolate I can find

and I either buy it in small quantities or give away MOST of what I buy. Then,

when I eat my chocolate, I make a real effort to eat it slowly and really savor

it. If I'm wanting potato chips I buy one small individual serving bag at a

time and again, eat them slowly. Often I am satisfied before I finish the

serving and am able to happily leave some on the plate.

I don't want to make it sound like I am always on track. The last few weeks

I've found myself eating more often and larger quantities. So this week I'm

focusing on using the bag of tricks that I've learned from reading this group's

posts. I've upped my protein (target a minimum of 6 protein drinks a day),

being more careful with my vitamins, cutting out the Nutrasweet drinks in favor

of more herbal tea with Splenda, writing down every bite that goes into my

mouth so that I have an accurate picture of what I'm doing, stocked the house

with more protein snacks, fresh fruit, and veggies, increased my exercise

walking from twice a week to three or four times a week.

One of the most important things I've learned is that you have to figure out

what works for you. If you aren't losing and you want to, but you feel like you

have to have the sweets, consider smaller portions and better quality. If the

sweets have control of you consider doing a protein fast. If you are just

snacking out of habit then change your activities or substitute a lower calorie

alternative (my wonderful hot green tea instead of potato chips might not sound

great to you, but I love the tea and feel satisfied rather than deprived).

Hope that helps. Thanks for asking - funny how trying to form an answer helps

me focus.

I certainly understand the desire to have something sweet after dinner.

There are 2 things I generally do. One is I will make a protein shake

about 8 pm. Sometimes I will do a vanilla with some berries in it.

Sometimes I will do chocolate. Not only does it satisfy the desire for

sweets but I also get in some protein. The other thing I do is tell

myself that I will not have any sweets for 24 hours. If in 24 hours I

still want some I will try for another 24 hours. If after 3 days of

doing this, I will indulge in a little bit of sweets.
