Hi guys,

Happy New Year to us all!

I'm just at 2 weeks on Meth now, and have started getting the occasional leg

cramps when I'm in bed. Very very painful, and they leave my calves feeling

quite bruised. It's a new symptom for me, anyway, and I'm wonderful if they're

related to the Meth? Has anyone else had this as a side effect?

I'm also getting small infections at the sides of my fingernails - not a huge

problem of themselves, but they're not clearing up with antiseptic cream / salt

water soaks etc - I have an artificial hip, and the biggest worry is that the

infection will travel to the joint, in which case I could end up with major

surgery again to remove it, clean out the infection, and replace it (shudder) -

so I'm off to hunt down some emergency antibiotics today.

It's weird on the Meth - the infected areas don't particularly hurt, and aren't

incredibly red and inflamed like you'd normally get - really obvious evidence of

how the Meth is suppressing my immune system!

Cheers,

I have no doubts that Vitamin C helps prevent colds (read the studies by Linus ing) but I do not believe it helps once you have a cold. I use a homeopathic called Cold and Flu which if you start taking it as soon as you have any symptoms it's gets rid of 90% of all colds in 1-4 hours. Even with Sarc I have only had 2 colds in the 14 years since I took a seminar by one of the top nutritionists in the world and he turned me on to it. The 2 colds I had were the 2 times I ran out of it. I now keep a bottle in every car, every coat I have and at least 4 others in the house. If it doesn't work with in 4 hours it normally means we are dealing with a URI or sinus Infection.

As far as building up the immune system Zinc is the cheapest and fastest way to do it. If people don't get to the cold and flu fast enough and the cold hits, I put people on 50 mg of chelated zinc every hour for 2 days and then every other hour for 1-2 days and then 1-4x's a day until all better. Most people's colds are gone in 2-3 days at the most.

For people with immune problems I keep them on 50-100mg of zinc from November till thaw. Then 50mg a day. For people like us I use a stronger immune booster called Immunicore.

But the Cold and Flu is the most amazing thing I've found in 25 years. I probably sell 500-1000 bottles a year of it. If only I wasn't more concerned about getting people better then making a buck I would probably be making good money. But I put just a small amount on top of my cost to make sure my patients can afford the best supplements.

Thanks all for your replies - some quick responses - no, I don't drink soda, and

I'm already taking a good calcium supplement + Vitamin D (I have to be extra

careful of bone health because of my artificial hip). I haven't had further

cramps, just two instances.

I saw my GP a few days ago, and she said that while leg cramps aren't listed as

a side effect of Meth, any medication can cause them. She didn't think I needed

to come off the Meth while on the antibiotics (besides the drug stays in your

system so long, it would be a slow process). Another complication for me this

week is that I've also just started tapering down on pred (dropped from 40 to 30

mg) so I'm feeling a bit crap from that as well.

I'm onto day 3 of the antibiotics - my finger is still a bit infected, but at

least I know that the meds will be stopping anything happening in my hip joint,

which was my biggest worry (I was born with hip dysplasia, had masses of hip

surgery as a little kid, and a total hip replacement at age 47).

I agree about the whole 'immune system boosting' thing - that's the whole

problem with sarcoidosis, an overactive immune system. Medical studies have not

shown " immune boosters " to be effective, and even Vitamin C hasn't been shown to

help matters (http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/DSH/colds.html)

- I agree with you Rose about the placebo effect probably being in play in these

situations.

Cheers,

> Taking supplements to boost the immune system is controversial, as the problem

with sarc is an overactive immune system. However, I do take zinc & ecchinacea

at the first sign of a cold & continue the ecchinacea & large doses of Vit C

until the cold lets up. The research is also controversial on the helpfulness

of these supplements; some studies show benefits in one or all of them, some

don't. I just know that, for me, they seem to work. Maybe it's the placebo

affect, but it works! I feel that taking immune boosters for a few days a

couple of times a year won't hurt, and so far I've been right. So, another

situation where we have to weigh pros & cons, then make a choice. Or roll the

dice & see what happens!

everything clears up, then try starting it again. Do you take any kind of

vitamins or immune supporting supplements? There is one that I used to take that

you might try called Wellness Formula. Maybe stop the MTX, get everything

cleared up. Start taking the Wellness Formula, or something else to boost your

immune system, for a couple of weeks, then try going back on the MTX again and

see how your system responds.

out really low and you have progressed? If so, at what level did the symptoms

that you are struggling with start? Perhaps your body cannot tolerate the MTX

beyond a certain level.
