ADEKs are at least chewable. There are pre-mixed protein drinks. See lists in the DS archives. Or flavored designer water. Guest guest Posted November 25, 2001 Report Share Posted November 25, 2001 the first 3-6 wks are very flexible as far as vits are concerned, and protein intake. i spaced my chewable vits out - 2 in the am and 2 before bed. i also was still taking my glucophage for diabetes, 1 in am and 1 in pm. then a zoloft in the am. and i was taking anti- biotics several times a day for a couple of weeks. you just have to space them out, and when you are taking your sips of water, include a pill every now and then. then wait a while before you take another. i also had to take 2 iron tabs daily. didn't take calcium or the big prenatal vits til i was 6 wks out. i probably only got in 32-40 oz water per day at first. i knew i needed more if my back/sides started to hurt. that was my kidneys saying " more water please " . so then i would push the H2O that day and it would get better. the eating was like for breakfast: 2 vienna sausages, and 1 or 2 crackers, maybe a few spoons of applesauce. then lunch would be a couple tablespoons of tuna with mayo and pickle relish mixed in and a couple of crackers. i snacked on kosher dill wedges. sour stuff really tasted good then. supper would be some thin sliced lunch meat like turkey or chicken or ham with a slice of american cheese and a cracker or two. then some fruit cocktail or applesauce for a bedtime snack. if i had to take a pill with food, i would eat a slice of cheese first, then take the pill. wait about 20- 30 min after you eat to start sipping your fluids again. then about 20-30 min before you want to eat, stop drinking. you can take tiny sips with a meal to wash down something if it sticks in your throat. you are still very new postop so don't be in a big hurry to get all that stuff crammed down your gullet. you are healing inside now so take it easy. eat what you crave. listen to your body. for variety in what you drink, try hot tea, cold tea, chicken broth, diluted fruit juice, and you'll be surprised what you can get down in a day. hope your recovery goes well for you. mary y > OK, guys: > > How on earth am I supposed to get in a bare minimum of 50-60 grams of > protein, 64 oz. of water, and all of these freakin' Flintstones, > ADEKs, Viactivs, etc., etc.? However, I am living proof that it IS possible to get it all in early post-op! Barring nausea and food sensitivities (which I didn't have and obviously can influence what or when/how much one eats), it's a matter of focusing on high-protein stuff, eating frequently and in smaller amounts... I'm going to post some excerpts from my early post-op journals --- Hope that will help many newbie post-ops to get more protein. It can only help with healing, provide energy, help build muscle mass and ward off various deficiencies... NOT SAYING that people who can't/don't get 75 gms/day in will end up miserable or anything like that... Just that it IS POSSIBLE to do (based on one's tolerance of certain foods, etc. and other post-op conditions)!!! :) ALSO, something to consider: a lower protein level *may* contribute to nausea and high protein foods *may* help reduce such nausea from occuring/continuing... It seemed that a few people who were nauseous noticed an alleviation of their problems with an increase in protein. Of course, nausea can be for many different reasons (stomach sensitivity, vagus nerve swelling, etc.), but low protein post-op can also contribute to the problem... all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. I still can't get in 64oz of fluid or 50-60gms of protein, although I did order liquid protein that will get my protein levels up there as soon as the damn thing arrives! For the Twinlabs LLP protein (tastes like crap I'm told), 2 tablespoons is 17.5 gms so you can get over 30 gms with 4 tablespoon of liquid protein. Since you can only absorb about 30gms at once, you can do your 2nd dose of 4 tablespoons in the evening and that will get you up to 60 gms of protein! You may want to try protein drinks as that will count for fluid and protein, but I just couldn't stomach them and I'd rather try to force down 4 tablespoons of liquid than 4oz-8oz of protein drink that makes me gag. You may want to try vanilla soy milk with protein powder..I can stomach vanilla soy milk with bananas, but I'm home now and have a blender. It's hard to blend bananas with a hand blender *grins*. Btw, I was managing Circus Mates chewable multi-vitamins on the 3rd day I was out of the hospital..they weren't as sweet as the Flintstones and I got them from Walgreens. I didn't start my Citracal until about a week post-op and they were giving me heartburn until a few days ago, so don't take pills and lie down afterwards because you'll feel like crap! Good luck! Makes sense that there would be a limit, however, because there are limits to other things the body can take in at one time, such as vitamins, minerals, etc. Are you just getting the liquid protein to be on the safe side or have your labs results indicated a deficiency somewhere? I'm getting the liquid protein because at this point, eating 60-80gms of protein that's required a day is still hard. I may actually get close today, but I want to make sure I'm definitely getting at least 60gms a day, hence the need for a supplement.
