Guest guest
Hello everyone, Something that has been on my mind for a while and is kind of related to this topic is the lack of any formal publication which states the bracing protocol as we now all know it to be. Even the global help booklet just says 23/7 for 3 months, then 14 - 16 hours until age 3-4. Nothing about the gradual reduction in hours. And I know a mum posted in the UK recently about coming out of the brace recently at age 3 and within a short time thought the foot was turning in. A few of us parents replied to say Dr Ponseti now recommends until age 4, but really, it's not surprising that those in the medical profession are not as up to speed as the parents who spend so many hours talking to each other on the internet and sharing information. As far as I am aware there does not seem to be a process whereby the medical profession are informed when 'updates' are available. eg. with the bracing protocol and the new section in the global help book re atypical clubfeet. I know the medical profession should be responsible for keeping themselves up to date with latest developments, but I can understand the difficulty when even the global help booklet doesn't always reflect current thinking (and it wasn't that long ago that it was updated)....unless of course anyone knows of any other publications which states the more up to date protocol? Also from personal experience, our first consultant had never heard of, and therefore did not recognise atypical clubfoot when had it. Dr Ponseti was able to diagnose atypical when we sent photos, but again there was nothing 'formal' anywhere at the time which might have helped my consultant know about it, and more importantly, how to treat it. I don't know the answers but thought it was a point worth making, as I know I have certainly been guilty in the past of feeling that I knew more than the health professionals, and that they were being irresponsible by not knowing what we parents all know. Perhaps that's the answer then - they all need to sign up here to find the latest information!
