Guest guest
I understand that a lot of doctors offices supply their patients with a card for their wallet explaining the DS. I am currently suffering from a brain fart. I know that I have seen some online, but can't seem to find it. If you know of something online that could be printed out, could you post the URL please. I am also interested in how many of you wear a medic alert for the DS and how critical you feel that is. Last but not least, I have seen numerous posts regarding folks who could not get medical insurance after they had the DS. Now I am employed and cannot be refused insurance for any reason through the company plan, but should I retire, I would have to use the company insurance or risk having no insurance at all??? Has anyone encountered this? thanks in advance, Theresa DS 11-19-01 Dr. Jossart -16#s
Guest guest
I believe there was a law passed that insurance companies cannot deny you insurance due to preexisting conditions. I would look into it more. Holly > I understand that a lot of doctors offices supply their patients with > a card for their wallet explaining the DS. I am currently suffering > from a brain fart. Guest guest
I have seen numerous posts regarding folks who could not get medical insurance after they had the DS. >>>>> Theresa, We had no problems but maybe that pertains to those who go off insurance and dont jump right from one policy to another. In other words they are without insurance for awhile before applying again, I dont know. But one thing......when you retire you have medicare and they certainly will insure you! (since they pay for the DS) After medicare you are looking for insurance that fills in the gaps that medicare doesnt pay and if you qualify for medicare you certainly qulaify for that.....the only thing I believe that keeps you from getting it is end time renal disease PRIOR to getting supplemental insurance but if you acquire end time renal disease after you are a member they cover you. So, dont worry.....nothing is in there about wls! Hugs, Judie
Guest guest
Judie, Medicare is just not adequate in California. My mom spends about 3- 400 a month in supplemental medical insurance and she is in pretty excellent health! Sighs. I am just concerned about the day, when it comes. Of course, by the time I can afford to retire, I might be taking spaceships to work, so I guess I shouldn't fret about it too much! Guest guest
I don't know if this is what you are looking for... There is a federal law that is supposed to keep folks from being hit with pre-existing condition exclusions in group policies. It is called HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This law states that when you leave a group insurance plan, your employer must provide you with a certificate indicating how long you were continuously covered under their plan. Then, when you enroll in a new group insurance plan with your new employer, the new plan must consider how long you were enrolled in the previous plan when applying their pre-existing condition rules; for example if the new plan has a 12-month pre-ex exclusion, but you were covered under your previous plan for 36 months, the new plan's pre-ex exclusion can't apply. This way, most people will not be hit with pre-ex exclusions when they switch jobs. BUT, if you have a lapse in coverage between plans of 63 days or more, the whole thing is out the window and you are subject to the full pre-ex at the new plan. And, unfortunately, HIPAA does not apply to retiree medical plans or private insurance. I guess Congress figures that between COBRA and HIPAA people shouldn't have a lapse in coverage between jobs and therefore be safe from pre-ex rules in company-sponsored plans, which would be okay in a perfect world. Then again, I've always wondered what alternate universe those people in Congress live and work in... > > I understand that a lot of doctors offices supply their patients > with > > a card for their wallet explaining the DS. Guest guest
If you lapse between insurance carriers, your new carrier can deny you coverage based on " pre-existing conditions, " which can include practically anything for which you take a prescription. ~alyssa Re: Wallet Cards > We had no problems but maybe that pertains to those who go off insurance and > dont jump right from one policy to another.
