Hi .

Just a quick question, do you know were to find a list of approved Ponseti

Dr.s.?

Ellen and Brage (dcf 2/8/02)

5 year old- Atlanta Dr.s

It has been along time since we have posted. Caleb is now 5 and doing

great. We went to Iowa last summer for a check-up and Dr. Ponsetin

was pleased, but still concerned about his right foot. It was always

the worst of the two with a very deep cavus. We have been out of the

brace almost a year and the right foot is turing in a good bit and the

cavus seems to be more obvious that last year. It is so hard to make

the 23 hr trip so we are thinking of going to one of the Dr.'s in

Atlanta that are on the list of approved Dr.s. I just wanted to see

if anyone else used them and get some input on which one to use. We

are also having trouble which his little toes curling under and

causing terrible sores. I did not know if this is a clubfoot thing or

a seperate issue. Thanks for any help!!!!

mom of Caleb BL clubfoot 3/31/01

Treated in Savannah for 5 months unsucssefully and then Dr. Ponseti at

5.5 months. 7 cast and tenotomy.

Faith asked me to fwd this to you. - Kori

If he had typical clubfoot presentation (i.e. no cavus issues) I'd

say great... go for it. However, y is the best they have(chief

of pediatric ortho there). He would have done much more invasive

operations on Gabe because he literally was under the impression that

complex clubfoot meant that Gabe had too much excess connective

tissue (his feet were too fat). He totally failed to recognize Gabe's

QUITE EXTREME cavus issues in both feet. He did no x-rays... simply

wanted to do a second open incision tenotomy, tweeking a few tendons

around the ankle while he was in there. UGGHHH! When I think what

could have happened.... Anyway, having said that, Gabe's issues are

pretty much resolved. Knowing what I know NOW about proper treatment,

when I wind up back in GA again (which is sooner than later), I

probably will take him there for checkups because I know I have other

options should he say something I don't like. This may seem contrary

-- I'll put it this way: If I could afford to go to Ponseti, he'd

never see anyone else.

, Are the sores actually cracks? Does he have exzema? Gabe

developes sore/crack between and under his toes that actaully turned

out to be exzema related. WE use 2% hydrocortizone. It usually

clears right up.

Faith,

They are more like cuts from when his toes flex forward and tears the skin.

We put neosporin on them and they heal, but a few weeks later they are back

again. His little toes are so crooked and they bend under his foot.

Thanks for the reply!

I am just curious what is cavus? I have never heard of that (not yet anyway!)

Cavus is the term for the part of the clubfoot deformity at the point

where the front of the foot curves downward and/or has a deep crease

on the bottom of the foot in the arch area. A very severe or complex

clubfoot usually has more severe cavus - and a deeper crease in the

arch, which must be manipulated in a slightly more specialized way in

order to fully correct the foot.

Hope this helps,
