Carole,

I was speaking to a nurse yesterday and I asked her about the flu shot she told

me that I had waited to long and that it wouldnt be as effective if I had gotten

it earlier back in October-early Nov. So I have crossed the flu shot off my to

do list.....I just want to comment on your post.....Your positive attitude is

going to be very important as you move through the surgery and post-op life keep

up the postive vibes :)....And yes Carole you are going to get a great job!

get everything ready for when I am ready to go back to work. Anyway, while I

was there, I saw that they are giving flu shots. Should I get one? I am

wondering if I should since I am having surgery so soon. Usually, I would

get the shot, but is it going to create any problems? I'm probably going to

call Dr. Hess' office and ask them, but I wondered if any of you nurses would

know.

Also, the nurse who gave me the TB test (which amounts to a little prick and

then they " read " it Monday - school systems require this), the woman who did

my test saw my patch for quitting smoking and she asked about how I was doing

and then what made me quit....so we got to my having surgery. I told her all

about the DS. She has a sister she thinks might be interested. So, I told

her to have her sister look up DS on the yahoo groups site. So, I got to

tell someone else about DS. I told her how it differed from RNY. Told her

about the RNY dumping and she said she thought that would cause diabetes or

ulcers. I remember reading about ulcers on one RNY list. The diabetes thing

is an interesting thought.

Anyway - that was my day today.

I got laid off from the work I have been doing for years and years, but also

happened to update my teaching cert here in OH, (used to sub years ago) so

now I am looking to substitute teaching again.....and possibly even full-time

teaching if I can get hired for next year. It will be lots easier teaching

and I know I will feel more confident after losing weight. No matter what I

decide to do work-wise, getting a job should be easier with the loss of

weight.

Lizbeth,

Don't cross that flu shot off your to-do list. I've been told by both my Dr.

and my school nurse that, since the height of flu season is usually around

January, February, that it's actually best to get your flu shot later rather

than earlier. In fact, the big push with flu shots in my neck of the woods,

here in Jersey, has been just within the past three weeks! IMHO it's better

to get a late flu shot rather than no flu shot. And Carole, (and here of

course it's best to get a true medical opinion since you're so close to

surgery!) from a teacher's point of view, when you are subbing, you are

SURROUNDED by nasty germs. Those precious darlings (and I say that in all

sincerity with my tongue only slightly in cheek) throw off much more

virulent germs than those you'd pick up from a mere adult (LOL!). One way or

another, good luck to you on you impending surgery AND your new career.

This question came up at Rabkin's last monthly meeting. He said you

should do it at least three weeks ahead of time. Some people get a

flu-like reaction to the shot, so you want to make sure you're over

that before surgery. Personally, I never get the flu shot so it

isn't on my to-do list, but if you still have time and it helps you,

go for it!

Dear Lisbeth,

My doctor gave me my flu shot yesterday (11/30/01) and told me that

he felt that this was the perfect time to get your shot. Since the

flu shot takes about 10 days to 2 weeks to become fully effective, it

will be protecting me before the holidays when everyone seems to get

sick. If you haven't yet gotten the flu, it is not too late to get a

flu shot. They are really limiting the flu shots this year and are

not encouraging people who they do not consider at high risk to get

one. Both my surgeon and my PCP recommended that I get a flu shot

this year. (I always get one anyway) Try and get a flu shot as soon

as you can.

Jodi,

I am definitely going to look into it...There are several places close by where

I can get it done real cheap! An ounce of prevention never hurts! Thanks!

I took my flu shot 2 weeks before surgery. No Problem. I also took the

pneumonis ahot which is taken every 5 years. I really don't want to get real

sick especially with this surgery. Ellen(Pam
