Guest guest
Carole-- Your tummy will swell postop--it is mostly a traumatic response. I left the hospital on day 6, I had lost 6 pounds. Measurements revealed I lost inches everywhere except my waist which gained 1 1/2 inches. By week three I was down back to original waist, week 6, I finally posted a loss in the waist measurement. That is one reason there is the complication of compartment syndrome for people who carry weight in the tummy(esp men). The swelling actually can impinge on the abdominal organs starting a cascade of failure starting with the kidneys. It may require opening the incision to releive pressure. Hope this make sense to you. Pammi
Guest guest
I didnt gain weight I actually lost....I know that some people who retain water have edema(sp)? and that they are put on diuretics but gaining weight is not uncommon at all! I actually lost weight before surgery but I still go by the weight I was on the day of my surgery and not the higher weight......In the end its all a number.....and if I look like a sexy kitten at 160 then the victoria secret models can keep there " I dont eat I only weigh 120 lbs bodies Lisbeth MsMystic1@... wrote: OK everyone......lots of posts talk about the weight people gained in the hospital that is supposed to be " water weight " . Does this happen to everyone? So then when you guys tell the amt you have lost, do you go from the starting weight of what you gained in the hospital? So then if you gained 15 lbs in the hospital and lost 35 lbs in 1 month, would that mean you really lost 20 lbs in one month? I am just trying to get myself ready to understand that I might see the scale go UP right after surgery. I sure am glad I have learned out this, too.....or I would certainly have freaked big time and thought my body was rebelling right from the get go. Guest guest
Carole, I was weighed at admission at 251. In five days I had gone up to 268. My ankles disappeared and I was NOT a lovely site! To date I have lost 12 pounds of from my original starting point, plus the 17 pounds of water weight I gained. I started my journal with my measurements and weight from the day prior to surgery...prior to the stuff i had to drink...laughing...and that is my starting point! Guest guest
Carole Personally I am going to not even ask what my hospital weight is? I think that at that point I will be so focused on pain and healing that I don't need the hurdle of doubting myself and this surgery so soon. Here we come, not long to go now!!!!!!! Guest guest
Do you think that the weight gain is more related to having lap surgery, or is it just common to any surgery? ~alyssa Re: hospital weight gain > I was walking all over the place in the hospital... Guest guest
Alyssa, I have gained water weight during each of my trips to the hospital in the past 3 months. However, this one was the most dramatic I guess, because of the stomach elements. All my water was gone within 2 Days. I'm talking 17 pounds of water, hon. Even though they gave me water pills in the hospital twice, the water works didn't start til I got home! Laughing And I think that amount of water weight gain was unique to me, but my liver and kidneys are probably over taxed from 3 general anesthesias within 3 months! Guest guest
Hey Alyssa (gettin' close, isn't it?? ) Between the fluids they pump into you and the trauma of the surgery on your body, you'll likely gain more than a few pounds in fluids. If you're concerned about how the numbers might look, weigh yourself BEFORE you go into the hospital for surgery and use that number as a benchmark. I agree with T...don't even bother weighing in the hospital right after surgery...or tell the nurses you don't wanna know. Guest guest
That's what I was figuring...no weighing until I see Dr. K to get staples out. I don't currently own a scale, so there's no danger in over-weighing myself initially...although I do see a scale purchase in my future!! ~alyssa Re: hospital weight gain > Hey Alyssa (gettin' close, isn't it?? ) > > Between the fluids they pump into you and the trauma of the surgery > on your body, you'll likely gain more than a few pounds in fluids. > If you're concerned about how the numbers might look, weigh yourself > BEFORE you go into the hospital for surgery and use that number as a > benchmark.
