Guest guest
alyssa, Does the hospital have nice/comfortable family waiting area? I don't know the age of your kids, but how about them going in their jammies (or let them sleep in a comfy " jogging suit " ) and taking a sleeping bag. They can pretend they are " camping " . If they take their baths before bed, they'll just need their faces washed and can play in the waiting room. (Pack a case of toys, make it an adventure for them) Your husband will have an easier wait with the kids to keep him company. They usually have tv in waiting rooms, maybe the kids could watch cartoons. My grandson is great in waiting rooms, bless his heart. Do they have game boys or such? It will be easier for you to have them with you. Be selfish for a change and request what you need. (I know that Moms are rarely selfish...) As the day gets a little later, maybe there is a " drop in " day care close to the hospital. We have a couple of good ones here in Nashville that stay open til 10pm week days midnight weekend. I don't know, just thinking as I type LOL I wouldn't reschedule either, if I ever get approved and get a date, bar the door LOL Hugs, Wanda
Guest guest
Alyssa Hey Sunshine When I was in hospital (I had my son who was 9 weeks early and hanging on by a thread and in a Humidity Crib on the other side of our hospital (and its huge), my husband had his final exam for Uni and couldnt get out of it, but I hadn't seen my new son and also was in major pain and anguish after having a c-section and other realted problems as well as being fairly hysterical. Anyway, (as usual making a short story long) one of my nurses, who was absolutely fantastic, called up the volunteers (who were apart of the hospital but usually only dealt with children and the eldery) and she came and met me, helped me into a wheel chair and spent the whole morning with my son and I, held my hand while the Neo-natal specialist otld us the odds of my son surviving and then wheeled me back to my ward and stayed with me, just to chat and let me cry on her shoulder until hubby got back there. Maybe it is worth asking your hospital about a volunteer or in Asutralia we also have Social Workers attached to the hospital and they were of great help to us as well. Sorry about babbling on.... PS also another thought, I don't know if you are apart of a church or anything but maybe they could help with someone to support you as well?????????? Guest guest
Alyssa, Talk to Dee because there maybe some alternatives. Also, once you walk around 5:30 am and get your blood pressure done and change into your gown, etc..it's already time for your 1st happy shot, so you're very calm by then..but the time you have the 2nd one before surgery, you'll be completely relaxed! I was busy checking out the surgical suite while they were getting me ready, etc and remember I hadn't had surgery before either! After all this, I agree with no rescheduling, but you may just have to do some rearranging. Gil and her DH brought their children and they were perfectly happy running up and down the halls and escorting their Mom for walks. *grins* It also helped take away that hospital feel. You just need to let your hubby know that you need to do this now while you know your general health is good because once your MO, your health can suddenly deteriorate rapidly and it's better to go into surgery as healthy as possible. There are several Dr K's patients that work at the hospital and also one or two that live in Delano, so you maybe able to get a babysitter that Dee or someone else knows, etc. You just need to explore your options! *hugs* Anita > Sigh...nothing can ever be simple in my life, can it? > > Surgery is all set for the 20th, but my in-laws have had to back out of taking care of my children for the 19th-22nd because my father-in-law is very sick and probably won't be well by then. My husband seems to think that I should cancel the surgery, but I just CAN'T go another 6 months obsessing, so I'm trying to come up with other childcare arrangements. My worst case scenario is that all 4 of us will go to Delano on the 19th (for preop), and then on the morning of the 21st, Dan will leave for LA (and Disneyland) with the boys while I'm still in the hospital. That plan, though, has me taking a taxi to surgery at 5:30am on the 20th and basically going into the waiting room and surgery alone, which I really don't want to do. A hospital is no place for 2 healthy youngsters, and Dan said he doesn't want to get them up at 5:30am to take me to surgery. Anyone have any suggestions...or a good babysitter in Delano?? > > ~alyssa > > >

Guest guest
Hi Alyssa: it was a rude awakening, but there are no taxi's in Delano. The hospital has a ride service that can pick up and drop you off, but I'm not sure if they're up that early. If you're staying in one of the motels, they will usually give you a ride. There's nothing to do in Delano = NOTHING....Tell Dee about your situation, she may be able to help. My mother stayed in the motel with me, and since she no longer drives I couldn't find a way to get to my post-op appt. Dee drove me! She's the best. My husband and kids stayed at the Best Western where they have an indoor pool. They suck, but the kids loved being able to use the pool. Hope everything works out! Guest guest
Hey Alyssa - me again! I think the hospital allows the family to wait in the patient's room, where there's a tv and pull out bed. The prep takes about 1/2 hour, then they could wait there... > alyssa, Does the hospital have nice/comfortable family waiting area? > I don't know the age of your kids, but how about them going in their > jammies (or let them sleep in a comfy " jogging suit " ) and taking a > sleeping bag. Guest guest
Dear Alyssa: I spent two of my 5 days with my partner away. You will be well cared for in Delano and don't need to worry about anything, as far as the hospital stay is concerned. The nurses will do everything you need them to do, and I do mean everything. You will also have company with the other people having surgery. I hope this all works out for you. Guest guest
and Alyssa, Dee Tinkle said the manager of the Best Western will not give rides to the hospital for the patients. So, you may want to consider Shilo or Comfort Inn. They both have pools. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who has helped in this decision. My new plan is that my oldest son will go visit my father and step-mother, and my youngest son will go to Delano with us and then to Disneyland with Dada after I clear my first 24 hours. Do you guys t hink I need someone those days? My surgery is the first one on 12/20. Guest guest
Alyssa, The 1st day or two your routine is sleeping, being woken up for shots, fluids, BP, etc, walking and then sleeping again. You won't really notice that your hubby's not there, you'll just wish people would let you sleep! *grins* Also, the nurses there are extremely attentive and just a button push away! Besides, between all that, we'll probably be calling you, so you're not going to feel lonely! Plus, you'll have a catheter in and your bowels won't be rumbling probably until the 4 or 5th day, so it's not like you'll need help in the bathroom. You don't get the joy of a shower until the 3rd day and the nurses help you, so even if your Mom wasn't there it would be fine. I thought I would be bothered by having someone help me shower, because I don't like people touching me and plus I'm very private, but the nurses did not make me feel uncomfortable at all and I was so glad to have a shower! I think your family's objections definitely go under the 'you're not that fat!' argument/opinion that skinny people have because they don't know the everyday struggles that we deal with that are caused by weight. I am sending positive vibes for your family and your father-in-law! I hope he continues to fight and starts to get better soon! *hugs8 Anita > Thanks to everyone who has helped in this decision. Guest guest
Thanks, Anita, and everyone else who has responded so kindly -- you really are a wealth of information and support, and I am so thankful!! My FIL had surgery this morning, and all went according to plan. The good news is that he doesn't have tumors anywhere other than his brain. The bad news is that they couldn't get all of one of the brain tumors, so it's radiation therapy next. I have no idea what side effects and joys radiation therapy brings with it. Apparently, with brain tumors, there is no chemotherapy, even if the tumors are malignant (we dont' know yet if they are) -- just radiation. Pray for him because we need him around!! Guest guest
Hi Tracey: Yes, I found that out the hard way. The owner of the BW dislikes having post op guests and will not go out of his way to help with anything, also Dee will not put the recliners in any motel but the Shilo. I don't recommend staying at the Best Western post op, but my husband and kids stayed there because of the pool. There is so very little to do in Delano, that I thought that Alyssa's husband and kids might be able to kill some time in the pool while she's in the hospital.
