Guest guest
Hi I traveled 3 1/2 hours to have my surgery done by Dr. Keshishian. I went for my 4 week checkup a few weeks ago and I go back in about 3 more months. Since I don't have to go see him for 3 more months the drive is doable. If I have any problems that can't wait until I see Dr. Keshishian then I will see my PCP. Hope this helps Take care and God Bless Tia Dr. Keshishian 10-18-01 << I am kinda uncomfortable with the fact that its four hours from where the operation would take place and wonder about follow -up care >>

Guest guest
Jean, I'm from Manchester, NH and I have a consult scheduled on Jan 7th with Dr. Ren in NY. It is my understanding that many of the pre-op and some post op/follow up visits can be done locally. Insurance is another ticklish issue, but can have a successful outcome. I'm not familiar with Tufts coverage though. From reading this list apparently there are quite a few doctors in the NYC area that a very good and do the DS. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. ann RNY Distal vs BPD-DS HELLO, I have been researching various wls " s and I thought I was ok with the RNY Distal. I have had more time on my hands and decided to research the BPD-DS. I am from the Boston area. I did not pursue the possibility of traveling to NY but I figure I should do some more research on it. I am kinda uncomfortable with the fact that its four hours from where the operation would take place and wonder about follow -up care. Also I wonder about insurance coverage. I have Tufts. I am looking for any information that would help such as Good Doctors ect. I honestly thought I was all set but have found myself second guessing my decision. Helppppppppppp Jean (Ladyjean111@...) P.s. I would especially like to talk to those that had to travel a distance. Thanks ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Guest guest
Hi--- I traveled to Spain to get this surgery. My insurance wouldn't pay for it. I got a great deal!! Dr. Baltasar is a great surgeon, and the extra culture and friends I made along the way were worth it. Open surgery was 11K, and the lap procedure is 14K, airfare and hotel extra. I would think going to a doc here in the states would be a breeze, no matter where it is. If you have a significant other or good friend that is " nursemaid " material you'll be fine!! We are so glad that you are taking the opportunity to research this more. Have you gone to duodenalswitch.com? There are additional websites there of several of the Doctors. There is a great site for Dr Husted in Nashville with an animation of the surgery that is wonderful. Don't pick a doc or a surgery because of " convenience " or location-- pick the one the is best for you. Guest guest
Hi Jean- I live 6 1/2 hours from NYC in an area that has no DS surgeons. I went to my consult in New York and am comfortable that Dr. Gagner will deal openly with my PCP. I gave my PCP all the information I could get my hands on so that he could read up on it. There are so many people who travel to have this surgery done that I truly wouldn't worry about long distance complications. If you are really concerned, contact a bariatric surgeon (or gastroenterologist) in your area and make contact with him/her...so that you have someone you have faith in who understands the surgery you will be having as well as how your digestive tract and tummy work. The most important thing is for you to PICK the sugery which is best for you...not just the one that is the most convienent. You'll have to live with your choice for the rest of your life. Make sure it will give you the quality of life you want. I have read many reports which claim that the Distal RNY has all the worst side affects of both RNY and BPD/DS. I'm sure you will weigh the pros and cons of each and pick the right one for your lifestyle. For more information check out Duodenalswitch.com it has a wealth of information that you find interesting. I wish you the best of luck in your research. Take care,
Guest guest
Hi Jean, I travelled 5 1/2 hours to NYC to have my surgery with Dr Herron at Mt Sinai. I also went out of network with my insurance and am covering some of the costs myself. But I consider it an investment in me and my future. I love NYC so going back there for my follow-ups is not a pain, but a pleasure, except for the 3 week follow-up. I did have complications and had 2 incisions become infected and lots of nausea for about 6 weeks. But my local PCP was a godsend and took care of me through all that. I would travel that far for the DS surgery again. Best of luck in your research.
