Guest guest
Can I just say how fantastic the growth chart CD is - particlarly the BMI calculation and RSS length curve (I now know Maddy has been increasing BMI slowly since birth and is exactly on the RSS girls line.) However - I'm slightly confused by her head circumference measurement. On the UK child health charts that everyone gets here she has been following the 50th percentile exactly since birth. On the magic charts (and the US standard head circumference charts I've checked) her head circumference has been moving quickly from 50th to 90th percentile over the last 9 months. The graphs are definitely different - even at 12 months the 50th percentile for US is 45cm and for UK is 46.4cm. When we go to get this measured the Dr measures around the widest point. Is this different in the US? - I can't believe we have that much extra brains from you guys!!! Gillian Tonia Oliveira wrote: Thank you for your message. Guest guest
Thank you for the complement! Katy and I worked with another RSS mom and the physician who created the original CDs to come up with what we think is a pretty darn useful tool. For those of you who don't know what she is talking about, it is a CD of growth charts, divided by gender and age, that you can enter your child's measurements into a chart on an ongoing basis, and it automatically charts weight, length and head circumference for Bith- 3yrs and then weight, length and BMI for age 2-20 (once your child is measured STANDING). For stature, it also plots the RSS stature mean for untreated RSS children (from the Wollman data) right on the same chart as your child's data -- so it has your child's curve, the normal US curves, and the RSS curve, all charted for you. Totally awesome. This is free to any member of MAGIC, so just call 1-800-3MAGIC3. They may ask you to pay postage for the DVD, I don't know, but it can't be that much. But re the head circumference question, hmmmm. I have NO idea. I was going to compare the CD to the hard copy charts, but you said you did that already. So what you are saying is that the US charts and the UK charts are different. Hmmm..... The only thing I can think of is that several years ago, the US revised their growth charts, because the original growth data was on a very small group of mostly caucasian children from a relatively privileged city in Ohio. Not the best " mean " for the entire US. Maybe the head circumf. changed, and the UK charts are from the old ones??? The only explanation I can think of right now. Hmmmm, very interesting question.
