Hello! Please, please, please do seek Dr. Ponseti's advice first before going

into that third surgery. My son JM was due for a second surgery when we found

Dr. Ponseti's method and sought his advice. My son is 5 years old. He underwent

casting under Dr. Aguilar here in the Philippines and never needed another

surgery because of the Ponseti method.

Welcome to the group. I'm sorry that your son's journey to

corrected feet has been so difficult! I hope that you will feel a

bit of reassurance in knowing that Dr. Ignacio Ponseti at the

University of Iowa is the world's leading authority on clubfoot and

he will be able to help your son.

Can you tell us who your current doctor is? I would highly

recommend that you seek out the advice of Dr. Ponseti before

consenting to this third surgery. I'm not sure where you're

located, but we can give you advice on getting to Iowa City to see

Dr. Ponseti in person if you're interested.

You can start by emailing him pictures of your son's feet and a

description of his treatment and surgeries thus far.

Have you been to Dr. Ponseti's website at all?

Hang in there, we're here to help you any way we can!

Dr. Von Stein is wonderful. She is great with , and looks him over really

well when we go. He has some other issues, so she checks him out for things

that could pop up as he grows (other than the clubfeet). The one thing I didn't

like was that she scheduled his follow-ups a year apart after the initial 3

month period. I don't know if this is standard for her or on a case by case

basis. has alot of other dr. appt. and we traveled 2 1/2 hours, so I

don't know if this factored in or not. We did not go through casting with her,

so I can' help there, but I know others can.

Hi ,

It sounds like you've been having a really tough time, and while your

doctor may be practicing the Ponseti method it could well be that he

is either altering some key piece of the method or he is simply not

quite experienced enough to handle your son's case. The Ponseti

method is not something that can really be learned and put to use by

sometimes when surgery has been involved, it may be better to go

send him pictures along with the email? You may expect to hear back

from him as early as tomorrow, or Monday, probably, he usually

responds within a couple days.

Also, you were asking about 's comment about the number of

casts; the foot/feet are normally corrected with 4-6 casts. 7-9 could

be needed for a more difficult foot. 12 is really the outside of

*normal* if the foot is exceedingly difficult. If you start getting

to the 7,8,9 range and the foot is not getting corrected it is time to

start looking for another opinion. How do you know when the foot is

corrected? It looks just like any other baby foot, sometimes a few

extra wrinkles around the ankle area, but other than that it should

look totally normal and be turned outward (abducted) about 70 degrees.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Dr. VS.

I am so thankful for this board. I really feel that if I hadn't found it,

that I would have put my son through more unneccesary surgery(ies). I just

hope that I haven't waited too long already!

I just wanted to update everyone that I did hear back from Dr. Ponseti this

morning. He has requested that I send him photos of Dino's feet and then he

can tell us what course of action to take next.

Thank you so much again!

I believe we talked with the nurse, it was at the time, but don't know if

that has changed, to schedule our appt. She was very helpful. You could try

the receptionist and if they don't have anything soon, then call the nurse and

explain you situation.

Definitely talk to her nurse. If you make an appointment through the

call center, they do not really understand what they are dealing with. If you

do get the call center, INSIST that the appointment be with Dr. Von Stein as

she is the only doctor there practicing Ponseti method.

Can anyone tell me what the " norm " is as far as wearing the braces after the

foot has been corrected?

I would just like a straight answer (or as close to it as possible) as to what

kind of road we are headed down?

It's not as bad as it sounds. You start out initially 23 hours a day, 7 days a

week for the first three months then it begins to reduce gradually down a few

hours at a time to night time wear (like 12 to 14 hours). Most kids sleep that

long at night anyway so it's no major deal, just part of their pajamas. The

brace is the key though, short cuts lead to problems, so use it!!!

Re: 7 MONTHS AND ....--Please seek Dr. Ponseti's

advice first!

That's great! Just take the pictures like Kori noted in her earlier

email to you. It might also help to note where the incisions are

from his last surgery if you don't know the details on exactly what

was done. Dr. Ponseti might be able to guess if he knows where they

are.

In the meantime, you might want to call and talk to a nurse at Dr.

VonStein's office to determine what the earliest date would be that

they can see you. You can always cancel the appointment if you

decide to go to Iowa of course. (I say talk to a nurse because the

regular receptionists might not try to work you in early...maybe

some of Dr. VonStein's families could chime in with ideas here).

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, I sent the pics to Dr. Ponseti today and he said that it looks as though

Dino has atypical/complex clubfeet and that he would like us to come out to

Iowa. He doesn't know of any doctors in Ohio that have treated a case like his.

I feel really overwhelmed and have a million questions.

My head is spinning!

Go. We did. Time and time again. Some stay at the RMH. We didn't unless it

was overnight. You won't regret it. We have the route all laid out (I think I

could do it in my sleep) and our favorite hotel close by. If he says come, go.

Honestly, it will be something you won't ever think twice about after he has

worked his magic.

Should I even consider going to see another dr? Dr. Dobbs, etc?

I'm just nervous about making the trip to IA, especially since Dr. Ponseti is so

old and someone just said that he didn't look like he was doing well?

We saw Dr. Ponseti in January and he looked very well. I hope he is okay. I

have not heard that he is not well so perhaps that is not true. If you go see

him, you will be amazed at his youthfulness and spryness, if that is a word. He

seems not a day older than 70! LOL And he has a delightful sense of humor!

Also, he works with other very skilled doctors, such as Dr. Morcuende, whom we

also saw when were in Iowa, as Dr. Ponseti called him in to consult on 's

feet.

I have already decided that if ever needs the ATTT surgery, I will take

her to Iowa and have Dr. Morcuende do it. (Yes, I like to plan ahead for any

type of contingencies....LOL) I do hope you go, as it is a one in a million

opportunity to see the absolute master of the non surgical treatment of

clubfoot. You would never regret going. It was such a great experience for us!

I did not ask Dr. P specifically about Dr. VonStein in Cinci. However, I did

tell him that I was from OH and he said that he was not familiar with any doc in

Ohio that had treated atypical/complex clubfeet.

Anyone who has a child with atypical/complex cf please let me know what drs you

saw and the results you have gotten thus far.....I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I don't think that we would qualify for some of the free flights, are they

all based on income?

Re: 7 MONTHS AND ....--Please seek Dr. Ponseti's

I wouldn't let worry about Dr. Ponseti's age disuade you from going to

Iowa. He is probably doing more than he should these days but he is

just so dedicated to these babies, you would never regret the trip -

he is really amazing. I had the pleasure of meeting him last year and

it was just inspiring to watch him work. Did you ask him specifically

about Dr. VonStein to see what he thought about her working with

Dino's feet? If he knew that you were looking at going to her and he

said she wasn't experienced enough, then I would listen to him. If

finances are going to be a big factor, although you certainly can find

ways to make going Iowa inexpensive (we can help with that too), I

think he would agree that Dr. Dobbs would be a viable alternative.

All you have to do is tell Dr. Ponseti whatever your concerns are, ask

him whatever questions you need to ask, he will not steer you wrong.

You sounded very enthusiastic. I think that we will probably make the trip. I

am just waiting now to find out how soon they can get me in? Also, trying to

decide if I should make weekly trips out there (4-5 weeks) or if I should just

stay for a month?

Re: 7 MONTHS AND ....--Please seek Dr. Ponseti's

advice first!

Please go see Dr. Ponseti. He is amazing. I have an appt. with him

Friday and would never hesitate to travel to him. He isn't

incredible CONSIDERING his age. He is just incredible.

This is the best possible treatment for your little one. There were

probably people who thought " Dr. Ponseti is 88--is it worth the trip "

and they have had four years of treatment. We can't predict the

future regarding Dr. Ponseti but can just cross that road when we

come to it. I hear he has other excellent doctors on staff. In the

meantime, see him as soon as you can. , his nurse, called me on

a Thursday for Lily's first appt. telling me we could get in to him

the next morning. I had been due to leave in a hour for a long

weekend celebrating my parents' 40th anniv. I went to see Dr.P. My

parents understood. It is worth any self-sacrifice to have this

kind, wise humble doctor lay his hands on Dino's feet. I am awed by

the difference in Lily's feet from getting her into the " right "

treatment. After 5 weeks of casting, Lily went from a size 0-3 sock

at age 11.5 months to an almost too small 6-12 month sock, not to

mention how beautiful they were! Go, you won't regret it!

Do I sound enthusiastic enough?!

I understand it can be difficult to travel but there are others here

who can offer you advice on travel and staying in IA City at the

RMH. I had a friend staying at the RMH who met a woman who came from

JAPAN just to see Dr. Ponseti.

Best of luck to you,

I emailed Dr. Ponseti about my daughter, . He advised, after looking

at her pictures, that she has atypical clubfeet. I will be seeing Dr. Dobbs

in St. Louis on the 17th. I will let you know how it goes.

Did Dr. P refer you to Dr. Dobbs or did he want to see personally?

Dr. Ponseti wanted to see , but he is not in our insurance network.

We just can't afford to travel there from Kansas, pay a $1000 deductable,

then pay for 70% of everything after that. I wish we could, but it is not

possible.

Go. Plan on staying, the time flies with only 5 days between castings, and Iowa

City is a great town. You'll be very comfortable there. I've gone with all

three of my kids.

LOL OH ,

I remember the first time we left home to go. It was snowing and the potential

for blizzard was great. My hubby and I looked at each other like maybe we were

nuts. But we went. A week later when I returned with my Mom to get a cast

change we did drive in a blizzard. My Mom kept looking at me like I was nuts

but after she met him and heard him talking to she knew why we'd come all

that way as well. It was so worth it. I don't regret it for a minute.

However, I do understand the desire to get another opinion before traveling that

far. Dr. Dobbs wouldn't be my first choice as he's as far away as Dr. P.

While it may be true that Dr. P is old and he may be becoming more frail as time

goes on, his mind and his fingers are dedicated to our wee ones feet. It is up

to you but for atypical/complex there's nothing like the Master's touch.

Chris

Re: 7 MONTHS AND ....--Please seek Dr. Ponseti's

That's great! Just take the pictures like Kori noted in her earlier

email to you. It might also help to note where the incisions are

from his last surgery if you don't know the details on exactly what

was done. Dr. Ponseti might be able to guess if he knows where they

In the meantime, you might want to call and talk to a nurse at Dr.

VonStein's office to determine what the earliest date would be that

decide to go to Iowa of course. (I say talk to a nurse because the

regular receptionists might not try to work you in early...maybe

some of Dr. VonStein's families could chime in with ideas here).

Angel Flight is free regardless of income. had a complex or atypical

case with her bilateral club feet and we went straight to Dr. Ponseti since we

would have had to travel to get to a doc familiar with these cases

anyway...figured it would make sense to go straight to the master.

I went alone, taking two small craft flights each way, stayed in the RMH for two

nights and came back, again taking two small craft flights each way...all of

this by myself with a two and a half month old. I ate free at the RMH out of

the community fridge and RMH provided free transportation to and from the

airport and to my appointment. The cost of my stay there was $30 for two

nights. I would have put everything on a credit card to get there but it was a

blessing that there were programs to help people get medical treatment. It was

overwhelming at first to consider it, plus I had to arrange child care for my

other three kids, but I will never regret going. Anyway, not to give you the

" hard sell " LOL, but just to let you know it is possible to travel to Iowa low

cost.
