Guest guest
That bar is too small, my daughter Grace went into a 10 " bar at 2.5 mos old. Granted, she does have wide shoulders but I would say that you need to widen his bar and my *guess* would be more than a 10. Take him in to see your orthotist and get a longer bar, preferably another adjustable bar so that you can widen as you go. & Grace > > Has anyone ever heard of a 5.5-month-old baby only having an 8 inch > gold bar? Guest guest
I would say it is time for a new bar!! Now I can't speak from exact experience as my 22 mo old is only at 10 inches right now-but he is hyperflexible and its comfortable for him but it is so helpful to have the adjustable bar. That ways-when things like this start, you can tweak the bar and see if it helps!! I would request a new bar-and also make sure its one of the adjustable ones so that you can tweak it as your child grows!! Saves on trips to the orthotics shops in the long run. To check the length of the bar, see if your baby can lay comfortably in between the shoes at the heel part or hold the the bar up to his back and check the width out that way. Guest guest
Zachary cannot get his head between his shoes on the bar, little lone his shoulders! It is definitely time for a new bar, although his orthosist refused to give us one last week. I am going to insist on one tomorrow! Here we go again back to the hospital... > > > > Has anyone ever heard of a 5.5-month-old baby only having an 8 inch > > gold bar? Guest guest
This is a very common mistake that orthotists make.....we have seen this hundreds of times here and it still ticks me off!! Make sure that they give you an adjustable bar so that you can make it wider if need be. Like I said, Grace was set at 10 inches at 2.5 months. We are lucky in that our orthotist works very closely with Dr. Shafique Pirani (Ponseti certified) and also has a right club foot herself so she is quite involved and knowledgable with bracing. She also always punches a hole in the shoes just before the seam at the heel on the inside so that you can see if the heel is seated down all the way in the shoe. I would print out a copy of Kori's 'tips & tricks' doc. and give that to him/her as well, may as well try to educate them a bit so that this dosen't happen to another child right?! & Grace 23mos urcf FAB 12-14hrs > > > > > > Has anyone ever heard of a 5.5-month-old baby only having an 8 inch > > > gold bar? Guest guest
I am embarrassed to admit (because I am on this board all the time! and have read of this issue over and over again...) that Lily hasn't been sleeping well recently. This morning I thought to check the bar length and it needed another inch and a half. I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of that. She has asthma and so night wakening aren't uncommon here but a light went on this morning. I think I'm going to have to upgrade from coffee to espresso and make thinking a regularly habit. You're in good company... Poor Zachary...he will back to his old self shortly with a new bar. > > > > > > > > Has anyone ever heard of a 5.5-month-old baby only having an 8 inch > > > > gold bar? Guest guest
The wonderful thing about an adujstable bar is that you can bypass all the " expert orthotists " out there who don't have a clue what they are talking about but need to tell you what to do and just adjust it yourself (GASP!), without any medical guidance whatsoever! (Double GASP!!!) LOL See if you can get an adjustable bar. Even our ortho doc was off on how long 's bar needed to be, although he doesn't argue with me about it. I think he knows better by now.
