Guest guest
At 4 months post op and down over 60 lbs, I have to admit that I have not been the least bit concerned about carbohydrates in my food intake. I chose this surgery so I would not have to limit what types of food I ate..and I love carbs. So I eat them! I wish that we could just forget that old diet mentality that blames food, all types of food are part of life..including carbs. The most important thing to remember is that there is a big difference between processed carbs and complex carbs though...processed carbs have been massaged out of many of their benefits and taken closer to sugar whereas complex carbs have lots of positive assets our bodies need for health. So eat your oatmeal but stay away from Sugar Frosted Flakes! crone elle in orygun

So eat your oatmeal but stay away from Sugar Frosted Flakes! Elle: What a refreshing post -- I've found this to be true in my case, too.... I was a real 'carb addict' before the surgery. I find that, by focusing on protein now (and ALSO my body honestly craving it more), I just don't have as much room for the carbs as I did. This doesn't mean that I don't eat carbs -- I have bread (sometimes just with butter but and just for the hell of it, but not often -- only if it's fresh-out-of-the-oven-homebaked and warm... I would be INSANE not to! AND, I use BUTTER only - none of that oily crap LOL). I have mac and cheese, rice or pasta -- but I just can't eat as much of it as I could pre-op. We went out to this great Chinese restaruant (Ocean Palace here in Brooklyn) for my daughter's 5th birthday yesterday. I went ABSOLUTELY CRAZY over this baked chicken with scallions and ginger -- it was to die for (even though the little bugger's head was pointed right at me on the plate LOL)... I barely made a dent in my rice bowl but did have some fried noodles with chicken and beef steak/broccoli... Protein just seems to be more filling and satisfying most of the time. I must admit that I usually indulge in carbs that have a protein combo -- Like chicken and/or cheese filled tortellini, au gratin potatoes with broccoli and ham chunks, fried rice with meat, etc. I can just enjoy carbs by their lonesome (the hot, steamy bread mentioned above, for one! LOL), but not as often and definately not to the degree I could pre-op. Then, there are days when I just don't feel like eating much and when I do I just want to pop some carbs... those are the days I'm sure to take a protein supplement. I've always thought I've been on the 'slower side' with weight loss, but hey -- I'm down 109 lbs in my tenth month post-op so I wonder what all that fretting and concern was about on my part in the past ten months! LOL I have 28-38 more to go and feel GREAT and look WONDERFUL! I have had my carbs, some sugar (trying to limit it, though) and a LOT OF MARVELOUS FOOD! I've eaten until I've felt full and it's a WONDERFUL feeling! So satisfying! Sometimes I find myself having the urge to eat emotionally (especially when I'm stresed out or depressed) but I'm more able to recognize it now because it's such an obvious departure from my usual 'routine'. I'm also just NOT ABLE to eat the amount I used to and don't get the same satisfaction out of it. I get satisfaction out of eating but not for emotional reasons. It's rather difficult to want to eat more when you just feel totally full and satisfied, you know? LOL And, I think this is the first time in my life (that I can remember) when I ever had that feeling. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. sinai/NYC 10 months post-op and still feelin' fabu preop: 307 lbs/bmi 45 now:
