Deb,

Glad you delurked. The 70/30 is good. In the files section there is a

FAB (foot abduction brace) Tips and Tricks document. It is wonderful.

It contains great information about fit, putting the shoes on, etc.

Reading it would be a good place to start. Would you mind telling us

who your doctor is? I am also curious about the regular shoes on a bar?

We have been using the Markells for a year and a half with few

difficulties (thanks to the Tips and Tricks doc).

I do believe anyone can send pictures to Dr. Ponseti. I haven't done

it, but those who have say he answers in reasonable time. Others with

more knowledge will reply I am sure. Just wanted to say welcome, glad

you are here, if you have problems let us know and we will help.

Question about Dobbs bar.

I have been lurking here for a few weeks. My son was born with

bilateral club feet. He is now 17 months old. We are seeing a DR

that somewhat follows the Ponseti method from what I can tell.

was first casted at 5 days old. Had a few months of cast and then

plastic braces that I could not keep on for the life of me. He had

his tendon cut at about 8-9m and then after cast was in the DBB. Te

bar he had had regular shoes attached to the bar, so he was finally

able to learn how to get the shoes off. Yes he is a determined

little bugger. (Crawling at 6m and only took less then 30min to

figure how to climb the stairs with a full leg cast at 8m)

We have just got the DBB with the Markell Shoes. The place we got

them from was no help in placing the shoes on. I have many issues

with the company, but noone else to get them from around here. How

do I know the shoes are on right and what degree are the shoes to be

at?? The DR wants 70degrees on the 'bad' club foot and 30 on

the 'good' foot. Does that sound right??

Also I have ready that some of you send pictures to DR. Ponsetti for

him to look at. Can anyone send pictures for a 2nd opinion?? Does

it cost?? Where do I send them?

I wish I found this site 17 months ago when we found out he had a

club foot.

Thanks

Deb

His left was called clubfoot, but was mostly due to position. He is a

twin so didn't get much room. He only had 2 cast on that foot and has

had no issues since then. So the Dr said that shoe should be at

30degrees.

Thank for the info about the shoes/bar. I will read that.

The bar he had we used store bought shoes for. It had 3 'prongs' type

things that attached to the outside sole of the shoes. But he was so

active it was nearly impossible to get the shoes to stay on the bar.

I don't know but this all raises the red flags in my mind. It is really

possible to have one congenital cf and one positional cf on the same child? In

any event the 30 degrees kind of concerns me, and I wonder about the style of

FAB you're using. It's not the standard for cf treatment that I'm aware of.

Even if it works, if it won't stay on the child it's worthless.

I would definately send some photos to Dr. Ponseti on this. No, he won't charge

you for looking at them but be prepared he's liable to tell you that you child

needs further treatment/correction or some other change of routine for optimum

results. Would you be willing to travel somewhere else for Ponseti Treatment if

necessary? At 17 months old he is still young enough to see good results if he

needs recasted by a trained Ponseti doc.

Hi, I'm a bit behind with reading all the messages so

sorry about the late reply.

I have twins too and when I found out about the

clubfoot at the 20-week scan it was pretty obvious

that there was plenty of space 'inside' and that it

couldn't have been positional. When did you find out

about it?

I had asked Dr Ponseti about the angle originally

since our own doctor set it to only 20 degrees, and he

told me it should *always* be 70 degrees for a baby

regardless of severity. I just thought you might like

to know what the 'master' himself said who should

obviously know best! :) You can email him for a

second opinion on this by the way, I've sent him

pictures as well at the time and he replied quite

quickly (and doesn't charge for it...).

Anyway, I hope it all turns out well for you,

Deb,

Sorry, I gave you the wrong info. Just my hair color getting in the way

again, I guess. I was thinking unilateral when I said the 70/30 sounded

good. If your son is bilateral, both feet should be at 70 degrees.

Again I apologize. Good luck with the shoes.
