Question about walking

I know this is a not so important silly question, so I have hesitated

to ask but I was hoping to get some perpective. Lily is still in her

brace FT. When she is out, she will " Walk " a little bit holding my

hands but it is a very strange, comical walk for only 2 or 3 steps

before she quits. She is 15 months. Will she not walk indepedently

until she has less time in her s?;is it possible she will be

much older before she walks?

Our original, shouldn't-be-practicing-on-clubfeet ortho told me she

would walk at the same age as other children but that clearly isn't

possible now.

She gets everywhere crawling so I only feel a bit sorry when we are

playing in the driveway. Ouch.

It would put my mind at ease if I knew this was " normal " (you know,

clubfoot " normal " ). Thanks.

,

not a silly question at all!

My non-CF son didn't walk till 14mo's. If she's taking steps, she's

right around the corner from doing it all the time. And really,

15mo's is within the realm of normal for walking, not only for CF

kids but for all kids.

I have three children, first walked at 11.5mo's, second 14.5 mo's,

and 3rd... my amazing little CF daughter... at 10.5mo's while in her

FAB 16-18hr/d. Go figure!

I would not say that 15 months is outside the range of 'normal' even

for non clubfooted kids, I think the range can go all the way up to 19

months before most pediatricians would start looking for problems.

And with her being still in the brace full time it is probably just

not feasible for her to be working on walking. When she has her hour

out of the brace does she stand and pull up? Does she cruise? If she

is not doing these things you might want to look at a little bit of

physical therapy, or at least ask your ped about it. Some babies just

have low trunk strength, not associated with the CF, that can cause a

delay in walking. If she's doing everything except for actually

walking (alone or holding hands) I probably would not worry, I bet she

will be off and running when she starts getting more time out of the

brace. When are her 3 months up?

For the most part kids do walk on time with clubfeet barring any other delays.

My son is still not walking aat 19 1/2 months. That being said, she still has 3

months to fall into the " normal " range of walking " on time. " With her being in

the brace full time, this hold her back a little, but not much. How long has

she been in full time wear? How much longer do you have left?

, that sounds oh so familiar (except for the crawling part, since my Dino

is 8 mos and hasn't started that yet). But I loved your comment....Our

original, shouldn't-be-practicing-on-clubfeet ortho.......that made me laugh!

We were told the same thing and now we are going to have to have casts put back

on for a month or so and then go in to the brace, and it just makes me sick to

think that had we done more research earlier, that Dino would by out of the

casts and only wearing the brace at night, therefore, not interefering with his

walking.

What area are you from, if I may ask?

Hi, !

My son is not walking at almost 19 months. I stress about it all the time,

but he is doing everything else he should be doing and his ortho keeps telling

me to relax and he WILL walk when he is ready. I guess some kids are late

walkers--whether they are clubfooted or not. I think trunk strength has

something to do with it, too.

I'm hoping (and praying, really, really hard!) that he will be an independent

walker by his 2nd birthday.

Hi

I just wanted to chime in...I have twin girls and one has a clubfoot....I was

very worried about her walking, especially when her sister walked at 14 months

and she still wasn't walking at 18 months....she didn't start walking until 19

months...she also was very comfortable with crawling everywhere...she could

cruise and seemed perfectly happy....she would walk behind her push toys so that

was a little comfort but it was still the wonder of if she would ever walk by

herself so that was the most awesome day when she finally did it....I was in a

little denial actually...I kept watching her and judging how she was walking

thinking it wasn't normal and just thinking that she wouldn't be able to

continue doing it...it is a crazy mind game that we play with ourselves....she

is now the most happy go lucky kid....she has been through so much that it has

really made her a stronger and happier kid because of it!!...so, I am sure that

it is a matter of time before Lily walks....we

even went out to Iowa to see Dr Ponseti to see his opinion about her not

walking (she was 18 months)...her told us he thought it would be a matter of

time, possibly a month or so and her was right on the money with that!!! It was

exactly a month!! So if she is taking a few steps she is heading in the right

direction....keep us posted on when the big day is!!!

Hi . I am so glad Dr. X has finally made himself worthwhile and

provided a laugh....now if only he had a stand-up routine instead of

an orthopaedic practice. Thanks for comment. It's good to have a

sense of humor about these things.

Our former ortho is in the Quad Cities (IA-IL). We have now moved to

Des Moines, IA. And see Dr. P, who is between our current home and

former home.

I couldn't believe your recent post where your orthotics specialist

put Dino in shoes with no bar. Where did these guys train?! The

Lower Missippi Valley University of Nitwits and Quacks? It is

frustrating! I hear someone like Naomi here giving advice and she is

more knowledgeable than the former team for Lily's care. We reached

a point with Lillian's Markells where they came off over hundered

times in a 24 hours period. A Hundred! And our ortho was largely

unresponsive.

And in response to a different post, I don't think of legal action.

But I do plan on writing letters (as recommended here, I have a draft

in progress) and getting his practice's, our pediatrician's and

OB/GYN's attention.

Please continue to keep us updated on Dino's progress. Great name by

the way...
