Not sure I understand all of that but avoid surgery at all costs. It's not

necessary.

Question about information reguarding a doctor

who pioneered a club foot...

..treatment in the 1970s.

I am being referred to a doctor in akron, ohio (i live close by) for

the correction of the bilateral club feet that showed up in the 19week

ultrasound of my (as of yet) unborn child. The due date is the end of

august. There is a strong family history of club feet, including

myself and my maternal grandmother.

Apparently:

" Akron Children's Hospital's chairman of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery,

Dr. Dennis Weiner, pioneered a procedure called Akron Midtarsal Dome

Osteotomy in the early 1970s to correct clubfoot. The surgery is

designed to allow more of the sole of the foot to touch the ground, to

align the toe and heel, and to allow more foot motion. "

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this treatment and its

effectiveness?

There is an excellent ponsetti approved doctor in cleveland Dr

Armstrong with Rainbow Babies and Children Hospital. I am going to

call and see if he takes my insurance, and if it is possible to get in

with him. However, if he does not and/or it is not possible I would

like to know all i can about Dr Weiner.

Thanks.

As a Cleveland area resident not only do we have Dr. Armstrong but Dr. Ballock

at the Clinic as well. If you need further info on either please let me know.

Meanwhile AVOID Dr. Weiner. Surgery is surgery no matter how you look at it.

Dr. Ponseti's method is certainly worth it as a start, not as a 'fix after

someone else screwed it up worse'.

Has your child had any surgery as of yet? If not, then there shouldn't be any

reason your child should have full range of motion and an ankle that rests on

the ground like your and mine using the Ponseti Method. I am unclear why this

method is more respected as I have never heard of it. If Dr. Armstrong doesn't

take your insurance, I would find another Ponseti doctor that does no matter the

drive. There is one in Cinncinnati, which I know is several hours away, but in

the scheme of things could be very worth it. If your child was going to have

surgery over the Ponseti method, I would do everything I could to find another

doctor.

I hope someone can give you the specific info you are asking about but this is

just my opinion!

. I am currently taking my son to see Dr. Schrader, who is in with Dr.

Weiner in Akron. However, my son is now 8 months old and his club feet are not

corrected yet and he is talking about wanting to do a third surgery. After

talking to a few of the people here, I decided to contact Dr. Ponseti himself.

He emailed me back the next day. He told me not to schedule another surgery yet

and that he wants me to take pictures so that he can tell me what steps to take

next. I don't have any personal experiences with Dr. Weiner, but just do your

research before settling in with one dr. I wished I would have gotten a second

opinion a long time ago!!

I'm here in the Cleveland area and have traveled to see Dr. Ponseti as well as

seeing our local ortho who trained under him. If you need local help after you

hear from Dr. Ponseti, I'd head to Rainbow to see Dr. Armstrong or the Clinic to

see Dr. Ballock. They both are excellent ortho's who believe in the Ponseti

method.

Sorry I didn't see this post before answering your other. Dr. Armstrong is with

Rainbow and while he can be hard to get in initially if your child isn't a

newborn, you can call his office and give them your best " I need to see him now "

speech and they'll do their best. He is very good. And Dr. Ponseti recommended

him to us to deal with our daughter's complex/atypical foot. However after

examining her and hearing our already complex history he knew Dr. Ponseti could

do more so he sent us there because her feet were really a challenge. Even for

Dr. Ponseti who eventually said he just didn't know what to do with them. So he

trusts him and I trust him to do whatever it takes to avoid unnecessary surgery.

We eventually went back to our initial local ortho - Dr. Ballock - for the ATTT

as we liked the Clinic overall better (our daughter had many health issues and

we were 'frequent fliers' at both facilities for awhile) and his bedside manner

is wonderful, too. We introduced him to the FAB and he recommends them

all the time now. LOVES them for tiny feet. :) Dr. Ballock will see your

child as soon as he can if you just call his office and talk to his secretary,

. Dr. Ballock will do what Dr. Ponseti recommends as he did so for us

without question. There was the 'discussion' regarding AFO's after ATTT surgery

but I won't go there. LOL

I do encourage you to see one of them for a second opinion if nothing else. It

can't hurt and it surely can help you avoid surgery you don't really need.

It is nice to hear from so many in Ohio. Thank you all for writing

with advice and opinions.

I must not have explained correctly,I am 34 weeks pregnant and I

want to make sure that he has the best doctor for his club feet.

(diagnosed at the 18week ultrasound)So I am trying to contact

several good area ortho's now before the birth. I was given Weiner's

name because he has an office in my town and works with the hospital

I will be delivering at.

I was born with a club foot and have limb length, scoliosis issues

because of it. I want to make sure my little boy can avoid as much

of that as possible.

I am going to call Dr Armstrong's office tomorrow and will look up

the other dr mentioned at the clinic as well. I appreciate the

information, and it is nice to know that Dr Ponsetti himself is so

hands on and timely when his expertise is needed.

Sincerely-

Coming in a little late here but I just wanted to tell you that an

osteotomy means bone surgery, no matter how you look at it. It means

cutting out a piece of bone and usually wedging it in somewhere else.

This should not be necessary with a newborn who has not had any

treatment.

The Ponseti method involves no invasive procedures, and when performed

by an experienced physician will result in a pain free, flexible and

fully functional foot. No need for painful surgeries to obtain these

results. I believe the osteotomy you're referring to would be used

mostly to correct a cavus (high arch) deformity which is actually the

first step in the manipulation of the bones in the Ponseti method.

Thanks again Chris. Would you be willing to either post or send pictures direct

I am waiting to hear back from Dr. Ponseti's office, as I sent them pictures of

my son's feet today. I am hoping that he can refer me to a local doctor.

I'd be happy to send them but since she's had such good treatment they are

finally nice and straight. I can send you pics of her before though if I can

find them. She was considered atypical initially because she relapsed almost

immediately after finally seeing Dr. Ballock and having him correct her feet in

three casts. Then she relapsed again and again. Dr. P could find no reason for

it and although she was very over corrected and had loose ligaments, her left

foot would not stay corrected even for a few minutes after the cast was removed.

Dr. P finally said he just didn't know what to do with her. We then agreed to

the ATTT and our local ortho said that the reason she couldn't stay corrected is

that her heel was full of fibrous tissue and her tendon was also pushed in too

far. He removed some fibrous tissue so her bones could settle in like they were

supposed to and that really did do the trick. We've been very pleased since

then and Dr. P couldn't believe the progress. So I don't know that your little

one will have the same trials that we've been through but I am always happy to

share!

She first went to see Dr. P when she was 9 mos old and we continued to see him

until she was almost 2. She had the ATTT surgery here just after she turned 2

and finally all is well with her feet. However, I don't regret trying to fix it

without that first. While the ATTT surgery isn't as thorough as the other, more

radical 'alignment' surgery, it still is surgery and that foot most likely will

have issues the other wouldn't. Because we fought for it, her right foot wont'

have to have any surgery.

Thanks.

Was that the first treatment that she had received or had you been somewhere

else before going to see Dr. P?

Question about information reguarding a doctor

who pioneered a club foot...

...treatment in the 1970s.

She was in the NICU initially and a Dr who claimed to use the Ponseti method but

doesn't put on the first two casts. We then went to Dr. Ballock who did her

initial correction and then corrected her first relapse. From there, due to

Dr. P's dx of atypical he sent us to Dr. Armstrong who sent us to Dr. P who

finally didn't know what to do with her and asked that we consult Dr. Ballock

again who then did her ATTT surgery. LOL How's that for a difficult two years!

LOL

Bless your heart! I pray that we don't have to go through those trials and

tribulations. Thank God your daughter is doing well now!
