Guest guest
, Sorry, dd is not with Herzenberg, though lots on this board are, so you will get lots of responses, I'm sure!...We went running to Dr. Ponseti after seeing 3 orthos here in Florida too...It was the best decision that we ever made. I wonder if it was the same docs...Who were 's doctors? Guest guest
Yes I have experience but not good news. My daughter was recasted at age one and age two, now is three and relapsing again. she has been going to ish Rite in Dallas. It is hopeless telling a two year old not to move around, so we just tried to place her in environments where she couldn't hurt herself. We watched more TV than I would have liked, but we also did lots of mazes and puzzles and coloring and her language skills went through the roof! Pros and cons.... Anyone have kids in casts at age 2? Hi everyone.. I also posted this on the other clubfoot website. My son , now age 2, has just started seeing Dr. Herzenberg. After seeing 3 different ortho's here in Florida, has begun to relapse. We decided to go to the best and visit Dr. H and we are so glad that we did. He decided to re cast on both feet and see how he looks in 2 weeks. He said he will re cast the left one once more (it is more severe) and the right one may be o.k. after one cast. After that, he will determine whether or not to do the ATT surgery. First of all, anyone have experience with a 2 year old in casts? It is not easy telling a very active 2 year old that he can't move around (although he is figuring out ways to crawl and scoot). Any advice on how to make this an easier experience for him? Also, anyone have success with re casting and not needing any surgery afterwards? I really appreciate any input. Guest guest
, Oh my goodness do we have experience with casts! Our daughter has been recast due to relapses constantly since she was 10 mos old. Dr. Ponseti sees her every two months or so and puts a new cast on her left and sometimes her right. These casts last for a week or two and then we usually have to go back for one more. Then we wait a month and start the whole darn thing all over again. Needless to say her walking has been sporadic at best. A few weeks ago our local ortho finally did the ATTT and discovered why he thinks the correcting casts didn't really work on her left foot and we're thankful that the casting phase of our lives might be behind us. Our daughter has made the best of the situation by always crawling and sometimes pulling up to a interesting stance as her bucket hung out there on her bent leg casts. Honestly we really don't know life any different so we don't do things differently. She does normal activities but just does them by crawling. Does that make sense? When out we do carry her and we've perfected how to stack the pop can boxes in the bottom of the cart so she can sit on them comfortably so life just goes on. Since the ATTT she's not supposed to stand on them for six weeks but that was totally impossible. She's been on them since 24 hours post surg whenever she can get away with it. UGH!!! Anyway, at least with corrective casts you can walk as much as you can muster although with those 90 degree bends it did slow our little 'determinator' down a bit. He'll figure out how to cope. Kids are like that. Oh, and she likes scooting toys with her bent casts. She can sit up and scoot around with them and she feels like she's more on our level. Chris Anyone have kids in casts at age 2? Guest guest
Hello, It feels like my son has been in casts at every age LOL! We bought him a view finder with slides to his favoirte movies/tv shows and lots of play doe when he was that age in casts also etch a sketchs are good and of course crayons, I always bought sharpees too and colored his casts now that he is older I have let him color his own but put a towel underneath of him since they are permenant markers. I also let him watch more tv/movies then usual when in casts just to keep him still sometimes. When he wanted to go outside and play I would pull him around the block in the wagon (we spent a few Halloween's in casts too but just used the wagon so he could keep up with the other kids). I would often put a heavy sock over it like my husbands so he didn't wear a hole in the cast because he was always so active and running, spinning, etc. in casts as much as I tried to keep him down. He actually broke a cast while we were in Iowa in September! It's a weird fit with the angle of the cast but I've always been given a cast shoe which helps protect it a bit too. I think the kids adjust very quickly to the casts and get used to them and learn to adapt hopefully it will go by quickly for you and him! Guest guest
Hi , I'm sorry I'm so late in responding. I haven't been able to read the boards in the last couple of weeks. My son turns 2 years old on Thursday. We just finished treatment for relapse with Dr. Ponseti in mid-February. had a cast on for essentially a month. Since he only had one (RCF) he managed to eventually walk around in the cast (which was quite comical to watch at times), but until that time, I pretty much took him to the mall, or to a park, somewhere where I could walk around with him in a stroller. That helped pass the time and keep his little mind active. We also watched a lot of Teletubbies and " Piglet's Big Movie " over and over again! When an active 2 year old can't move around much, there are limitations. I just tried to mix it up as best I could. I would get out in the stroller at least 3 days a week for both our sanities. Now, in the shoes 22/7 (transitioning to 20/7 hesitantly), is more mobile, but he still has to crawl a majority of the time right now. So we still do the outings. I get down on the floor and crawl for a while with him. I also bought him some crayons and I encourage him to color on paper and in coloring books for a while each day. That usually occupies about 15 minutes once or twice a day. We read books. I just try to keep his mind active. If you persevere and offer books a few times a day or crayons, etc. He may not accept them at first, but after a while he may ask for them. That's what I found with . Make these different things available to him and he'll eventually ask for the ones that interest him the most. Hope this helps. If you need other more specific ideas, I'll continue to wrack my brain.
