Guest guest
Hi Amy, I wouldn't worry too much. You've lost a lot of weight in a short period of time. I think your body is just taking a break. For 3 weeks in my 4th month I lost only 4 pounds. The next week I lost 4 1/2 pounds. I bet you'll experience another drop real soon. Did you weigh at your current weight in the past for any length of time? That's where I usually plateau. Keep up the good work and don't despair! Kathleen F Open Duodenal Switch Drs. Guest guest
Hello, I am not post-op. I am having surgery in January. In Delano with DR. K. I was told that I should not drink any carbonated drinks for at least a year or o.k.d my my Doc. I love coke but that is one of the things I have to give up. Dee told me that the carbonation would pre-maturely strecth my new stomach. Don't know if that helps any or not. Good Luck!! --- ayasud@... wrote: > Hi all- > > Well, I've been really down lately because my weight > loss seems to > have ground to a halt. > > I am 4 3/4 months out- surgery on July 6th 2001. You also seem to be focusing on protein while having a little carbs on the side... Sounds great to me!!! I think you're just on a plateau and this can occur no matter how much exercise you do or how little one eats (actually, eating less will put one's body into 'starvation mode' and it will be more prone to plateau, I think). I went through quite a few of these (as has every post-op) and wondered 'is this IT? What am I doing WRONG?' It is just your body trying to adjust, hon. I've even GAINED weight when on plateaus --- anywhere from 2-4 lbs!!! Then, it gets lost again and I progress downwards... This, too, shall pass! AHve you had any extended ones? Up until now I've had a week or two here and there where I've hung out at one weight but then there has been a big drop. I've not gone this long bouncing around over such a wide range- almost 10 lbs my weight varies. And see, now I am sounding like a wacko and I swore I was not going to be one of those post-ops who got like this. Hee hee. >> Amy: I LOVE Terriaki -- I will make some terriaki salmon tomorrow night, actually! LOL I try to avoid sugars whenever possible but I haven't eliminated them from my eating habits. I try to watch the sugary drinks (juices and such) because I think a lot of calories can pile up there without one really recognizing it. I like my carbs, too --- I just can't eat them as exclusively or as much as I did pre-op. I prefer dishes where the carbs and protein are mixed together -- Fried rice is a good example of this. LOL I was always able to eat quite a bit. I could eat 4-6 ounces in my first weeks post-op. That's part of the reason I got all my protein in (75 gms from first day home). That and the fact that I could consume milk/dairy products without any problems. Now, I eat 10-14 oz of food at a meal. It really depends on how hungry I am. Then again, I can have meals (and entire days) when I just DON'T feel like eating much at all. I rely more on protein drinks then as a quick fix. I can eat a 7 oz sirloin steak with some veggies on the side (with maybe one slice of bread) but then I would be TOTALLY FULL. I'd say I eat rather 'normal' portions (not really any more than most people eat but definately NOT an RNY portion). I stop when I'm full and feel totally satisfied. I've experienced plateaus but I haven't really chronicled them -- I've thought they've lasted for 1-2 weeks tops at times. I think I'm starting one now. I've been at 201 for about a week now. I can even gain anywhere from 2-4 lbs when on a plateau but usually the rapid weight loss will immediately follow the weight gain. Damn, I'm waiting to break that 200 range so I have a good justification for another Outback Steakhouse trip! ROFL I NEVER thought I'd make it here --- I think I lost about 80 lbs by 6 months out and then I started to say 'hey, I'm getting somewhere!' That provided me with great relief. Now that I'm ALMOSt out of the 200 range, I feel like a new woman and much more confident about the surgery and how my body has reacted to it. Sounds like you are at a crucial phase in the weight loss --- Your body is really, really fighting -- could be a point where the body really feels the need to hold on at this point. Soon enough it will 'give up' and you will start losing again. Keep hydrated and I've heard that high fat consumption can 'break' a plateau. And, remember -- like many have said before --- MEASURE yourself. I'm sure you're losing inches even if the scales aren't budging (or, even if they are going up). I was really good about taking measurements in the first month post-op (when my mom was here to help me) -- it was like they were FLYING off of me even though the weight loss wasn't as fast and impressive. Maybe you could try adding a protein shake to your daily menu (you already take in a lot of protein - but this may 'jump start' the metabolism even more. I've found that ISOPURE can be mixed easily with a fork and only using water -- I got the strawberry flavor. It's decent and not as 'heavy' or filling as many of the thicker shakes which I make with milk). You can also try upping the fat (hopefully it won't give you oil slicks, bad gas or loose bowels as it can with some people). This may help 'clean' you out and break the plateau. Also, keep WELL hydrated even if this means sucking icewater all day long! LOL I know that I don't drink enough water even though I think I'm keeping well hydrated, so adding more can only help your kidneys function better and optimize your system... Please keep us posted! Guest guest
Thanks, : I do try to focus on protein, but at the same time I feel like a cheater alot because I do like my carbs. I love fried rice, I love bread. I don't eat alot of sweets but it is hard to stay away from carbs in general- bread, potatoes, etc.. Like for example, I know the teriyaki has alot of sugar in it, and pizza is half bread... but aside from eating chicken breast and filet mignon, what am I going to eat? I am just feeling like I don't know what normal is anymore. What should I be eating and how much? How many carbs are too many? Your weightloss has been great, have you found that you can eat alot more now than early on? What about plateaus? AHve you had any extended ones? Guest guest
Amy, Plateaus happen it's really frustrating I remember being a pre-op and saying I will never complain about plateaus since its a resting period for the body I have had a plateau for the last 2 weeks. I weighed in at 192 2 weeks ago and I promptly went back to 195 where I have been for the last 2 weeks today again I weighed in at 192 I am hoping that this is the last time I bounce back up to 195 but who knows I have noticed that I am losing inches so I am not freaking yet LOL...Hang in there Amy your weight loss will start up again soon. Guest guest
Plateaus are not fun but I am use to them. I was averaging 9 to 10 pounds loss a month and now for the past four months I have lost maybe 7 to 8 pounds. Up and down. But-this is the weight I was at about 14 years ago and I feel my body is adjusting. I am not getting crazed but I would still like to lose 40 more pounds. I have a large hernia and would like to take care of it with a tummy tuck but they would like me to lose all of my weight first. So iam eating everything I want and I am happy for the 110 pounds I have lostand I still have another 6 months in my window of opportunity. Dec. 1 is my 1 year anniversary. Good luck to all and don't stree. Eat and be merry. Ellen(Pam
