I'm not sure of the numbers, but for years we got food in Tim by feeding

him Pediasure in a medicine dropper while he watched videos. Might not be

the best for habits, but he was always as stubborn as Emerence. Now he's

tube fed. But I know several people who have said it was easier to get

some food in them if they're being entertained (uh... dinner theater??),

so something to consider in a pinch. We also removed the video when he

refused to eat. I suppose if she normally eats OK, you'd have to consider

disadvantages of precedence-setting...

Do you have glucose gel onhand? You just squirt a bit between her

cheek and teeth. It is immediately obsorbed into the system. In a

pinch, gel icing in the tube works, too. It's a good way to get that

blood sugar up when she won't eat.

Hey ,

Dr H prefers our children be kept between 80-120, but the Drs here in Ohio

don't see anything wrong with 60, and treat you like a nutcase, if you

insist that you want you child kept in the 80-120 range.

A blood sugar of 96 isn't bad, but if you feel she's dropping too quickly, I

would try to get small amounts of Pedialyte, Gatorade, formula??? down her.

This should help keep it up. Proteins or complex carbs would be the

ultimate.

As much as she's wanting to sleep, could she be coming down with something??

started with a low grade fever yesterday, and ACTUALLY took a nap

for me!! I should have known! LOL He was admitted to the Clinic last night

with an elevated white cell count, to see if they can find the source of his

infection.

Anyway, just a thought.

HUGS!!

Hi,

B actually called with your number because she knew that you

would have an answer! I got her endo almost immediately by page and

she just said to have me keep checking every hour and if she went

below 90 to call and she was going to leave an order for an IV with D5

or D10. Thankfully when she woke up she had two sips of oj. And then

at the dr. she had a lollipop and was not spilling ketones. Right now

she is at 104, about 20 lower than normal so I'll squirt some oj in

her mouth later (thanks INGA for the idea!).

So, h ere is the question, isn't it bad to pump her up with sugar

instead of food or is it enough to bridger her until she is eating

well again? (I got a 1/2 of a dollar size pancake in her and about 4

biites of egg at dinner).

, mom to 5 and Emerence 2.5

Well, last week she had cocksackie (hence the no eating/drinking ER

visits and hospitalization) and she seems to be sneezing a lot so I

thought a cold but her ears were good, lungs and throat good, no

fever..so not sure.

So I WAS right that Dr. H recommends 80. Any reason why? Anything

in writing? I think my endo is very open to the idea but if I have

proof.

She was comfortable with 70 but very willing to go with 80. I just

want to give her something for her file...anyone know if this

is " written " anywhere?

Thanks,

, mom to and EMerence

B did email and tell me that she gave you my number. I did

not mind one bit. You can call anytime.

The glucose gel is good to get her blood sugar up in an emergency or

when you see her sliding downhill as you did. The hope is that once

the sugar is up, she will feel better and attempt to eat on her own.

It will not prevent the spilling of ketones necessarily and won't work

as a longterm solution. It's just to get her out of the woods until

other measures can be taken.

I'm glad she is feeling better and can eat a bit. I hope it continues.
