I haven't been on here for the past month. We had a death in the

family and things have been very hectic. However, I know we have

had many conversations about behavior, so I wanted to share our

latest story.

The past year and a half has been very difficult with Coby. He has

obsessions, compulsions, out bursts, language delays, violent fits,

autistic traits, hyperactivity, ext… I'm sure you all remember

how frustrating it's been for our whole family. We've been fighting

doctors to help and finally we have made a HUGE break thru!!!!

After going over every medication on the market, Coby's gene and I

decided to try Coby on Risperidone. Dr. H suggested it at the

convention because it helps with impulse control, obsessions,

hyperactivity, and it's an appetite stimulant. I was very scared to

give this " anti-psychotic " to my two year old son. Things had

gotten so bad that I was not taking my kids outside of the house,

because it was too over stimulating to Coby and he would ruin it for

the rest of the family. So, we gave in and decided it was time to

take a leap of faith and try what the doctors were suggesting.

WOW…what an amazing difference it has made!!!! Judith said it best

when she said, " I finally have the son that I knew he should have

been all along. " He is so loving, compassionate, and helpful. He

had spurts of it here and there before, but because he would get

stuck on an action and then get frustrated, we didn't get to see it

as much. And he's eating like a horse. He NEVER turns down food!

3 key examples:

He never shared anything at anytime for any reason.

Everything he wanted was his possession and no one was allowed to

touch it. Carlee wanted to see something that was actually his and

he handed it to her. I didn't have to ask and neither did she. He

heard her crying for it so he let her see it.

He had carried a football with him like a blankie. It had

gotten really bad for about 3 days straight. He would not let go of

this ball, not even in his sleep. If he dropped it at night he

would wake up crying until he found it. He would bite the end of it

and hold it in his mouth while he rode his bike, because he would

NOT put it down at any time. After 2 days on the Risperidone he put

the football in his high chair for about 6 hrs straight and the next

day he never picked it up. Now he still plays with it, but he may

act like it's a baby for a bit or then play catch with it, but if

Carlee wants to play with him he will let her. (Oh, playing this is

the FIRST time he ever played any kind of imaginary play!)

He could not sit still to read a single page of a book. He

now begs me to read him a book every night and he listens to the

whole thing. He even interacts with me and points to pictures in

the book and calls them by name.

All the doc's that said it was just a discipline problem can eat

crow. I have not had to discipline Coby one time. I'm sure that

will not last, but I have not changed my routine and things are

better. So please, any of you that are at your wits end, hang in

there. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I swore Coby was

the worst behaved child on the earth, if he can make this big of a

change any of our kids can too!

le,

I am sorry for your loss. However, your Coby story is amazing! I

remember reading your other posts and thank GOD you found a doctor

who listened and treated Coby. Your other kids must be so much

happier too. Life sounds like it has taken a great leap for the

better - very happy for you!
