I remember those mornings when their sleep is so light, it seems a

sneeze would wake them up. Zach used to clunk his bar on the crib and

wake up because of it, and that would frustrate me! (and him!) One

thing, we took the bumper pad out the first time he got caught up in

it, I think he only got his shoe stuck in the rungs once or twice,

less often than in the bumper pad, for sure. We switched Zach to a

full size bed (we skipped the toddler bed, seemed a waste of money to

us) with angel guard rails on both sides when he was 2 years 3 months

- we would have kept him in the crib until he was 5 if we could - but

we had another one on the way! ;) OR...Your little man just may be an

early riser, some kids are - not because of any other reason other

than how they are genetically wired. (or it *could* be the bar, but

he'll get used to that clunking) (my second) was a TOTAL

ROOSTER. That kid would wake at 4:30/5:00 on an almost daily basis

for several months. UGH. (and he doesn't have clubfoot) Thankfully,

he would sit in there for 20-30 minutes without fussing, so we'd leave

him in there. Finally, he started realizing we weren't going to come

and get him, and dozed off every now and again, and finally started to

sleep later and later. Is it too light in the room? Now that summer

is here, perhaps the light is waking him up? Do you have room

darkening shades? For me, at one it would feel a bit too young to

make the transition to the toddler bed - but you gotta do what you

gotta do to get some shut-eye! I don't know what the " recommendation "

is in terms of age and making the switch - perhaps somebody else

around here does?

Good luck!!!!!!

Holly :)

My daughter Kelsey had this same issue and slept in the pack and play from the

time she was 14 months until about 18 months and then we moved her to a toddler

bed with a full length bed rail on it and the other side against the wall. She

still had the security of the crib but not the banging issues. She is now 2

1/2 and in the toddler bed without the rails and we have a new twin bed on

order for her that should be here soon.

My question is, at what age did you all move your children to a toddler

Thanks for any suggestions.

I know this wasn't your question, but have you checked his bar length

recently? If the bar is starting to get a little short this could be

what is making him uncomfortable - thus he is thrashing around more

and not sleeping as soundly. My son Sammy is 21 months and still in

his crib. He does this night waking, banging the bar thing everytime

his bar starts getting a little short.

We moved the shoes on the bar, got new shoes, padded the bar,

everything that we could think of related to the bar. It has been two

months since we moved the bar so I checked the width against his

shoulders again tonight before I put him to bed. His shoulders are

just barely inside the heels so I moved the shoes out one more hole.

He doesn't wake up at all during the night, so I don't think it is a

comfort issue with the shoes, but we will see. I don't think he is

just an early riser because when he sleeps until 6:30 or 7, he wakes

up talking and happy but if he is up any earlier, he cries and is

clearly unhappy and still tired.

Hi ,

Moving the bar out slightly like you have might help. Sometimes it takes

just one tiny adjustment to make a difference to a sleep pattern.

We moved our son into a Pack & play when he was 11 months.

The first night he went in, we were on holiday so he was exhausted from the

trip. For the next couple of nights I'd put him in when he was almost

asleep. I also made a big thing of putting in his favourite teddy to sleep

there and making it up with his blankets before bedtime. I'd let him play

in it during the day with all his bedding inside and take his daytime naps

there so it became a cosy and familiar place for him. Another thing I just

remembered when I was thinking about your mail was that my friend had given

me a soft foam mattress for the pack & play to make it more comfortable for

him, because the standard 'mattress' was a more of a thin pad and quite

hard. I think I was the first mom to move a baby into the pack & play from

a crib ( is almost 3 and a half now). It was a totally coincidental

discovery on our part. We'd gone on holiday for a month and he slept so

well in his pack & play from day 1 that we gradually realized the only

difference was his bed. As soon as we got back home we sold his crib!

It was amazing the instant difference in his sleep comfort compared to the 2

or 3 months we'd struggled with the crib.

No more banging or getting stuck and frustrated. He'd rest one shoe up

against the soft sides and stopped waking up all irritable.

Every child is different, but 1 year might be too young to move into a bed.

definitely wasn't ready for it at that age. He found the pack & play

less intimidating than the full size bed that was in his room. When

was just over 2 he moved into the full size bed with a safety rail that has

soft mesh on the side (made by Chicco). I know lots of people use the

toddler beds with success, but the ones we have here in South Africa are

quite narrow and I wanted him to have ample room to move around with his

bar. To get him used to moving into the bed when he was 2, I think it

helped that he'd taken some daytime naps on it and was very proud of himself

for being so daring. After a couple of weeks he announced that he would

sleep in that bed at night from then on and he never went back to his

pack & play again.

As you said, it's unlikely to be a shoe discomfort thing because

sleeps well for the night and happens early morning. When 's shoes

needed adjustment he'd wake up probably 3-4 times in the night. If you've

ruled everything else out, there's a good chance it's the crib, like it was

in our case.

But also, sometimes went through stages of waking early/being restless

at night when he was nearing a developmental stage (crawling, walking) or

teething etc. And sometimes he just went through stages of waking too early

for no apparent reason. If this went on for a while, I'd put him to bed half

an hour to an hour later for a week or so. That seemed to help him to get

used to sleeping later again.

I don't know if any of this helps at all. It's so hard trying to find the

cause when they can't really tell you yet. Good luck.

Hi - do you have a bumper pad on 's bed to try and buffer some of

the sound? I actually made one and this has been somewhat of a solution for us.

I am going to adjust where it is to get better sound protection though!

If you are worried about a bumper pad, they are only advised against before the

baby is old enough to turn over as they can collect CO2 (although I have always

thought the wide open top of the crib kind of combatted that - it's a wonder any

of US is alive!)

Good luck and thinking of you!

Thanks for the suggestions. We actually do have a bumper pad, have

always had one on the crib but it isn't working anymore. Last night

we made sure he had a good dinner (he doesn't eat great at dinner

often) and he woke up at 4:30. I am thinking it may be a combination

of the bar banging and the stage he is in now. He is walking and just

this past week, walking independently. On the other hand, this has

been really going on since March. Before that he slept until 7:30 or

8. Who knows what it is, I wish he could tell me! lol He has napped

in the pack and play today and will sleep in it tonight so we will

see...

have you checked the bar length? night waking is often attributed to

bar getting too short. maybe?

Ysp, did that, both when this started and again last night. We even

got new shoes because it looked like his toes were being squished. He

is sleeping through the night fine, he is just waking up way too

early.

It's great that your little one is sleeping through the night. When

you say your son is waking up " too early, " how early is that? My

toddler went through a phase that lasted a couple months ... he

thought it was great to get up at 5:30 a.m. when he was 10-months-

old. He'd stay up until about 8:00 a.m. and the rest of the household

would get up b/c he was so noisy with his toys... Then his mood

would " crash " and he would have a very long morning nap (say 4

hours). Thank heavens this phase of life passed!!!

We now have a second baby (with bcf) that loves to sleep in til 10:00

a.m. and the toddler stays in bed til 9:30ish. They both go to bed

at 8:00 p.m. I'm just waiting to see if the younger one will start

getting up at 5:30 a.m. and stay up.... let's hope not!

Have you tried putting your son to bed a little later each night? I

hope it's just a phase for you guys too!
