Hi there - we're pretty new to this too and would be interested in

hearing about others, but it looks like 's right foot is

slightly bigger (hardly noticeable!) than her left - and I think her

right foot was more severe than the left. gave us 2 different

sizes for her P/M, but he thought that eventually they'll be the same

size.

's feet are not the same, although they are similar. When I talked to her

ortho about it, he said that bilateral babies feet are never exactly the same as

each other. From all the pics I have seen of clubfoot babies, all the club feet

look slightly different. 's ortho stated that he thought that the

bilateral babies wouldn't have a noticeable size difference in their feet as

adults. 's calves are the same size, which I think would be true for all

bilateral club feet babies...but I don't know that for sure.

Are bilateral clubfeet symmetrical?

For the parents of babies with bcf, have you noticed any differences

between the two feet? Say, if one foot is more or less severe than

the other, would there still be a foot/shoe size difference and/or

difference in calf sizes?

I'm still new at all of this so I have soooo many questions.

Thanks!

My son is 31 months and at this point there is no difference between the

size/appearance of his feet (although I can still tell the minor diferences).

When he first got out of the DBB, one foot seemed smaller, but over time this

seems to have corrected itself.

My daughter has bcf. Her right foot is smaller and fatter than her left foot.

She's only 6 months, so I don't know if that will change.

's feet look the same, but one was a little stiffer. It required the same

number of casts to achieve correction though, so it wasn't much stiffer. They

are almost the same size, as there is a slight difference, but not even a 1/2

size. His calves are identical as well. He is almost 16 months, so he still

has a lot of growing to do. We will see how things go.

Hayden's left foot has always been more severe and was made worse by the bad

casting at Children's. Dr. Pirani was quite concerned with how far behind it

was compared to the right. Even now, when I take the PM brace off, his right

foot stays in the 70 degrees position, but the left moves to neutral. As far

as size goes, they seem to be about the same.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I would expect a slight

difference given that no one is actually completely symmetrical. Our

first (non-Ponseti) ortho was the first to tell us that corrected

clubfeet were usually slightly smaller in size and that the calves

were smaller as well. But, he said that being that our daughter is

bilateral that hers would be symmetrical. After being on this sight

I've noted that some bilateral cases will have one foot more severe

than the other. That was what prompted my question. My daughter's

right is slightly stiffer than her left and we've observed more

progress on the left being that it is more flexible. We get her 6th

set of casts today and then the tenotomy on Friday. We'll see how it

all goes....!!

,

As one of the old timers on here, I can definitely say each foot is

different. My son Jakob who was born with bcf has different feet. His

left foot (which was slightly less severe) is a little longer and

narrower than his right foot. One time we had his feet measured at a

local Stride Rite store, there was roughly a half size difference,

although he needed the larger size to accommodate the extra width of his

right foot. We don't have to split sizes.

Aleksander's feet are also slightly different in size (he has bcf).

It is my understanding that pretty much everyone has different sized

feet, regardless of clubfoot or not. My feet are slightly different

in size, and I don't have clubfoot.

FYI: Asked the doctor today. He said that there most likely won't be

any noticeable differences in the calves. The feet might slightly

differ but any variances in bilateral usually aren't as distinct as in

unilateral.

Our son Ethan has atypical BCF and he is now 12 months old. His left foot has

always been a bit stiffer than the right and I still feel his dorsiflexion is

better on the right than left. His left foot is smaller (it seeems to almost be

one whole size smaller and at the time he was only in size 0 shoes). During the

casting stage his right foot seemed to suddenly flatten out and suddenly seemed

longer than the left. I kept waiting for the left to do the same but it never

did. However after 5 months in the s the difference in size seems to be

slightly less and hopefully over time things will even out.
