Guest guest
I went through the same thing with my daughter. I would recommend contacting early intervention for a physical evaluation. My daughter was 50 percent delayed in gross motor skills after coming out of 23/7 FAB wear. Everyone swears that it is not related to the brace, so I would look into physical therapy if I were you. It has helped my daughter. She never would stand on my lap or anything like that. She was very weak. She also didn't come out of her FAB full time wear until she was almost 8 months. I think that it probably is true that children who receive Ponseti treatment from the start and are only in the casts for 2 months don't have problems, but your son obviously was in casts much longer? Anyway...every state has an early intervention program and there is no cost. My daughter is 16 months now and still isn't walking, but physical therapy has helped tremendously, and they come right to your house! Good luck. Donna something needs to be sure. Guest guest
My son is exactly the same. He was in casts for so long that he wouldn't even move his ankles or toes, never mind bear weight. I recently took him to the physiotherapist and she showed me a few tricks to get him started bearing weight and guess what? He is doing much better already after just a few weeks! He will also be coming out of his brace full time at the end of this month. If you'd like to know what the tricks are, you can email me privately if you like. chenyao120 wrote: Hi all, my son Isaac is 7month old now and has worn the brace 23hours a day for three months. Now it's time to give him some more happy time without the brace on. Guest guest
My son,, is just exactly the same age as 's and started the Ponseti method about the same time I believe, between 4 and 5 months. The difference with mine was that he was in casts only the first month and out of them until we began the Ponseti method. is now 9 months and still in the boots and bar 23/7 and is pulling up and has been standing on my lap for a while. It may be just because not all babies do things at the same time and it could be due to the long casting. It sounds like, from 's experience, that some physical therapy would be beneficial. It certainly wouldn't hurt. and 6-19-05 FAB 23/7 -- In nosurgery4clubfoot , Cohen wrote: > > My son is exactly the same. Guest guest
My daughters's feet are pretty sensitive and after the FAB came off for the 23/7, it was a little more so she was reluctant to bear weight on them a whole lot. I think the weight bearing is good for him so I would not worry about his being a little different than your friends child. Children develop at such different rates at this age. Isaac's legs may not be as advanced as the other child and this may have nothing to do with the brace at all. If you are very concerned, mention it to your doctor. Kelsey walked a little later than most but now, at 2 1/2, you would never know any difference. The thin calves is perfectly normal in children with clubfeet. Guest guest
Hey , Don't keep those tips a secret, share away! I'm sure there are several moms who would be interested to know. : ) Hi all, my son Isaac is 7month old now and has worn the brace 23hours a > day for three months. Now it's time to give him some more happy time > without the brace on. Guest guest
If this is his only issue, I would say wait a month or two to see if it improves; however, you are the mommy and you know what you should do. I have a niece who did everything early and still at almost 3 is continuing to advance quickly. She did not bear weight until around 9 months and started walking at 11 months. Her brother is now 10 months old and he was the same way. I saw him 3 weeks ago and his legs were like jello. Now she is emailing me pictures of him standing up holding onto a table. Once kids start they really blossom. That being said, if you have a feeling something is up, and he would benefit from EI get it. gets 4 different services and they have helped tremendously! 11/19/04 chenyao120 wrote: Hi all, my son Isaac is 7month old now and has worn the brace 23hours a day for three months. Now it's time to give him some more happy time without the brace on. Guest guest
Hi. My son is 4 months old and I have not noticed any weakness in the legs at all from the brace. In fact, I think the brace may have actually strengthened his legs a bit. He actually bears weight on his legs with me just holding his hands. I think each child is different and will start to show his stuff when he is ready. My oldest son (no clubfeet) wasn't able to stand like this when he was only 4 months. My little guy (left clubfoot) does have the " skinny " ankles from the shoes on the brace. I, too, loosened the top strap thinking it would help, but it hasn't helped. I think a lot has to do with the fact that they are babies with a lot of chubbiness in the legs that has been displaced because of the brace. I am sure once they start growing and their legs mature the whole skinny ankle thing will go away. chenyao120 wrote: Hi all, my son Isaac is 7month old now and has worn the brace 23hours a day for three months. Now it's time to give him some more happy time without the brace on. Guest guest
Hi , From what I understand standing and walking is actually good for clubfeet, so I don't think you'll be doing any harm to your son with it. It's normal for the leg to be a bit thinner but I don't think that makes it weaker. I found with my son that lifting the brace seemed to make his legs actually stronger... He did have very thin looking ankles and feet compared to the rest of the legs though but this was only due to 'fat replacement', ie any baby fat that would normally be around the feet and ankles is pushed up due to the shoes. This will go away eventually. I don't know if leaving the shoes loose to avoid it is a good idea, don't his feet come out of the shoes if you do that? My son's feet and legs look just like his twin brother's now and he walks (or rather runs most of the time) exactly like his twin. All the best, with (3y) and Alister (3y, RCF, Ponseti method, UK) --- chenyao120 wrote: > Hi all, my son Isaac is 7month old now and has worn > the brace 23hours a day for three months. Now it's > time to give him some more happy time without the > brace on.
