Guest guest
MIchelle, I was almost 8 weeks post-op before I could eat without hurting or getting sick. Then all of a sudden it changed. The only thing that bothers me so far with what I have tried eating has been steak and beef (like a roast). Patience is what I was told when I thought I would never get to eat normal again. Guest guest
, How long ago was your surgery? I have the same problem off and on and lately it has been on. Last night was a good example as I tried to eat a beef and noodle dish. I ate all the beef and a few noodles. Within 10 minutes I got that pain in my stomach and was trying everything to get the gas to come out. In about an hour, I was vomiting everything I had for dinner. I know I didn't eat too much. Seems like I have this problem almost every evening at dinner. Either I just feel awful for a while, or I feel really awful and then vomit. The only food that seems to go down well is raw veggies or eggs. Weird. When I mentioned the problem to my doctor, he started talking about some awful test and I decided to wait and see how things are at my 6 month check (next month). I guess I can't offer any advice, I just wanted to complain along with you. Kathy M. - big whine too! Guest guest
my Belle, My surgery was 7/24. Just got home from lunch and blew chunks in the parking lot. It happens. It decreases with time I have only had 3 episodes of puking in the last 2 weeks. Its a trade off a little puking in order to be able to enjoy life again. Good trade IMHO. Best to you and your husband.

I guess I can't say I feel bad with *everything* I eat, but some days it feels that way. I can go for several days without any problems, then I go for a week with almost every meal bothering me. Of course I am also losing weight at too fast of a rate, so I guess this is all a trade off. Even with all the troubles, I would still do the surgery again. As for the creepy test, it had something to do with drinking yucky stuff and a camera going down my throat and inspecting my digestive system. It wasn't an upper GI, but I can't remember what the name of it was. Whatever it was, I certainly don't feel bad enough to have something that awful done. Kathy M. I wish I could help you out but I didn't experience that at all post-op (except on occasion when I ate too much or something it was I ate that disagreed with me). I think it is due to the stomach sutures healing. Some friends of mine who had the surgery before and after me experienced this pretty badly -- they couldn't eat or felt nauseous when eating and/or threw up. It's a REAL BUMMER, I'm sure. But, I'm equally SURE that it isn't a permanant situation! :) Perhaps the temperature of the food/drink is exacerbating things? Have you noticed it particularly with cold items over warm ones? This isn't supposed to happen. From now on, just tell me that everything's gonna be OK. It's too early post-op for me to be considering the possible, ugly, long-term realities. Guest guest
-- I can't remember how many weeks post you are. But the stomach was essentially cut in half--a nice long seam all the way down it. There is a fair amount of swelling of those tissues that goes along with that. Maybe go to just soft foods--instant mashed potatoes with made with water seemed to go down good. It seems that at about week 5 or six the tummy swelling went way down and foods that felt like rocks before didn't anymore. Pammi
Guest guest
> No! Again, I say, no! , Don't worry, I think I made it sound worse than it really is. I almost never have any gas or BM problems. I also ate everything today without any problems. Mostly I have to be careful with portions. If I eat too much, it hurts. If I eat too fast, it hurts (from the excess air). I remember how it felt to eat in the first 6 weeks post-op and this is much different. At that point even 2 bites of food hurt. Now if I am careful I generally don't have any pain. It does get a whole lot better at 6 weeks post-op. As of now I eat anything I want and sometimes I pay for that. But once again I don't have the gas or BM problems other people have. If you are early post-op, IT DOES GET LOTS BETTER! From what I understand, it takes from 6 months to a year to get to full recovery. I am at 5 months now and I am counting on being much better at my one year mark. People I have met in my local group have all said it is almost normal at one year. That may sound like a long time right now, but let me tell you that the last 5 months have flown by for me. Just take it one day at a time and know that each day it does get a little better. Somedays we have setbacks, but in general we only get better. Kathy M. Guest guest
, Keep in mind that I saw posts from 3 people that are still having vomiting issues more a few months post-op. Think about the several hundred people that had DS surgery over the summer. Plus, there may also be extenuating circumstances, ie, strong gag reflex, undiagnosed allergies, even maybe just eating too fast still. You never know. The majority of people don't have issues and even those people that have them longer than everyone else may not have them forever. For instance, I know I vomit when I try to chug water just after I eat because I'm thirsty. I know I don't have room, but I'm thirsty, so I try it anyway. You'd think after the first time I'd realise that I should drink slower so I don't throw everything up, but no, I did it a second time. Hopefully, I'll deal with my thirst and won't do it a 3rd time, but sometimes we have a hard time breaking habits. I used to love just downing an entire glass of water when I was thirsty! At less than 1 month post-op, I think percentage wise I would assume you're not going to have problems, rather than you will! Don't worry, be happy now! " that was the end of my pity party. that was the best thing that my hubby (who has been a rock of support through my whole journey) could have said or done for me. it was my turning point. the amazing thing to me was that one day, about 4 months out, i woke up feeling great - no more throwing up, much less gagging, and have felt great ever since. i eat what i want, when i want (including, but not limited to, mexican, thai, chinese, etc). i have lost 125 pounds to date, and today wore a pair of size 14 jeans - down from barely fitting a 26-28. there are still days where i over-eat but my stomach reminds me (just like a normal person's) that i ate too much, and i stop. i am able to drink 4-6 oz of iced tea and take my meds and supplements. LIFE IS GOOD. you will get there too, it just takes some time for your eviscerated body to recover. hang in there, and you will see that day by day you will make improvements, and soon you will posting to us that you put on size 14 or 16 jeans!!! take care, ~amy c~ open ds/dr k/april 2001 300 lbs/175 lbs
