Guest guest
Okay ladies - I recently overheard a DS husband talking to a nurse - " She took her pill every day, too . . . I would think if anyone was considering birth control via hormones -- the pill MAY NOT be as effective because of our malapsorption but the other forms of the pill (patch/shot) may have a better chance or more comprehensive coverage.. Of course, I haven't read *any* studies to this effect nor do I know for sure if getting the hormones via skin/muscle would 'circumvent' the possible decreased efficacy issue the digestion of the pill can present... These other alternatives do seem promising for us, though. I am very hesitant about relying on the pill (in pill form) as a post-op... These are questions I should address to my surgeon. If we recieve the hormones via patch or shot, do we need a 'normal' dose or would it have to be adjusted for some reason? all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/Mt. Guest guest
Oooh Lisbeth...then I hope you find an answer soon! BTW, Rabkin advises that regardless of whether or not you use the pill, you should also use a *mechanical* means of birth control during the weight loss window. This includes condoms, diaphrams, sponges or big, flashing neon STOP signs!! (okay...so he *doesn't* recommend the last one) I can't stand the pill and I've been on the depo shots for the past two years. Delphine said it was okay to continue that as long as my every-three-months shot doesn't come due the same week as surgery or soon after. She said I didn't have to use anything else on top of that, but y'all know there is only one TRUE way to prevent pregnancy (aside from being a guy, that is). Crossing her fingers, but not necessarily her...oh nevermind, > > Putting all nookie on hold until I speak to the Surgeon, Endo and Gyno....I am going to cover all my bases before I get off first base! Guest guest
Yikes! Good thing I checked in before going to bed tonight! I picked up my bcp today, thinking that tonight would be the night :0! Actually, this is great ammunition. I've been trying to get my husband to get a vasectomy for about a year now! I also tried the DepoProvera shots last year, and they were a major downer. Not to mention that I had my period for 6 months straight. IUD is out of the question since I've had an ectopic pregnancy and my doctor says it's too much of a risk. Guest guest
Lisbeth, I may be remembering wrong, but I think the Depo-Provera study showed an " inconclusive " weight gain. Something like <2lbs over the course of a year?? Since the average adult gains 1lb/year, this was ruled inconclusive. Since I'm not average and I've gained approximately 10-15lbs (on average) per year as an adult, I couldn't say. However, I remember the weight gain being more directly noticeable while I was on the pill than since I've been on Depo. Who knows? > > , Liane et all, > Now I have heard that women tend to gain weight on the Lunette shot or the other birth control shots....and was one of the reasons I was going to ask for regular bcp....but now I am wondering which would be best....this is all very confusing...I have an appointment with my endo on friday so I am wondering if she could answer these questions.... > Lisbeth
Guest guest
I'm surprised that the doctor would recommend using the diaphragm during the weight loss window. The diaphragm depends on a proper fit. Even a small weight loss can compromise it's effectiveness. It is not a good option for women losing weight. Guest guest
I took no chances.. I started on Depo after surgery.. the hardest part is psyching myself up every 3 months to stick myself! Once the needle is in, the shot itself is a breeze.. Go figure.. when the doc wants to do a fingerstick for instant blood sugar testing, I can't do it.. yet can give myself a shot (after some psyching-up..) with a verry long needle... Guest guest
Lisbeth- I worried about slow weight loss from the Depo shot, but decided that it would be easier to deal with than a pregnancy that my body might not yet be ready to deal with.. and I gotta admit, until recently I had decided that I was losing just fine.. of course, I was a " serious-neverending-plateau virgin " until recently... and from all I've heard, this happens to those NOT on Depo... so who knows? Besides.. until you're committed to one guy, condoms are still gonna be a neccessary evil...dammit. Just a few thoughts from a sleepy person.... Guest guest
Rita, I believe this was suggested *in addition to* using the pill. Besides, diaphragms aren't supposed to be used alone, but with spermicide. I used a diaphragm all throughout my last diet where I lost almost 100lbs. I had it checked for fit about every three months and it only had to be changed at the very end of my weight loss, but you're right in that it must be a good fit in order to work effectively. I think the general idea is to use every means possible to avoid getting pregnant during the weight loss period. If you have one plan, get a backup...and then get a backup for your backup. - > I'm surprised that the doctor would recommend using the diaphragm during the > weight loss window. Guest guest
Whoa, Liane! You stick yourself? That was never even offered to me! LOL! Besides, I don't think I could do it. I don't mind the needle part, but the injection usually stings enough that I don't think I could do it to myself! > I took no chances.. > I started on Depo after surgery.. the hardest part is psyching myself > up every 3 months to stick myself! Guest guest
Diaphrams won't work during weight loss!!! A diaphram needs to be refitted for every ten pounds of weight loss, as I recall. That would be about every couple of weeks if you have a low BMI and oh hell, perhaps every couple of days if you have a high BMI. Now the time required to be in stirrups could in and of itself prevent pregnancy...chortle, but I would consider a different method. Now, this nausea is enough to act as birth control for me right now...sighs...although I do make most of those " windows " . Damn, I'm sick of losing one meal a day! I am suppositoried up the arse, so to speak, taking two antacids a day...prescription at night and over the counter in the morning, and still i lose one meal a day! I need advice, suggestions or just a pat on the back please! Guest guest
Jenifer, I hate to admit to this, but last year I explained to new hubby that pregnancy would not be an acceptable thing at my advanced and obese age! So he willingly agreed to a vasectomy. Sadly to say, the following month, as I missed my monthly visitor, rolling my eyes, and underwent a pregnancy test, my doctor also ran a hormone scan and said I had none! Yup...went from normal in one month to menopausal the next! Poor hubby was NOT amused...sighs. But thank goodness that is behind me! Guest guest
I have not been on hormone birth control for 4 years until this last month. I am on the monthly shot. I was a little dizzy and emotional the first few days but the rest of the time was worry free. I have liked it and I will be going in to get my second month shot this next week. I wonder if we will ever be able to shoot up ourselves. My mom and dad both shoot up inslin daily. I could do it once a month. Machelle 7 months post op down 100 pounds.
