Hi, Kate!

Have you seen/read the tips and tricks document on using the FAB?

It's in the files section on this group's site and also can be found

at http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil in the bracing

section. Definitely use socks!!!!!!! You don't want him to get any

blisters or have stinky sweaty feet! :) You say his right foot is

slipping out- is he unilateral or bilateral? Do the shoes seem to

be the correct size for both of his feet?

Who is Ben's consultant?

Best wishes-

& (3-16-00, lcf)

My main advice is to use socks with the s since the feet get really

sweaty, which might be causing some slippage. I put powder inside 's

socks and then put them on her feet, which cuts down on sweating. We have had

no slipping out of the shoes at all. Make sure that you really hold his foot

down (the heel) when you tighten the middle strap first, which is the main strap

which holds the heel down and the foot in. It took a good three weeks or

so to totally adjust to the shoes. She still fusses on occasion because of the

bar, I think. They are comfortable on her feet, though, and we don't have

sores, blisters, etc. Good luck!

Kate,

Use socks for the shoes and tighten the straps very tight. The

leather straps stretch quite a bit. When my son first started out in them, I

tightened them only to where I thought they looked comfortable, but the leather

really stretched out after he wore them for a day or so. I had to make them

tighter and tighter each day to accomodate for the stretch in the leater.

thank you for replying! It's so nice to know that there's help out

there! Ben is bilateral. His consultant is Dr Turnball at Brighton

but chris young has been plastering him (physiotherapist).

I will look at the tips page and follow your advice about socks.

Many thanks

Definitely use socks. And buckle the sandals tight. I was awake the

whole first night thinking I'd cut off the circulation in my son's

feet when I tightened the straps. But he was fine and I was the only

tired one! :) The rubber around the sandal really seems to provide

padding and protection against cutting off circulation.

Really make sure that you hold the heel firmly in place with your

thumb as you fasten the middle strap first. That keeps the heel

down. Then fasten the top strap and finally the strap near the toes.

When you received the s, did they come with instructions? I

found that the instruction page was very helpful for me to follow

because there were pictures.

If the right foot continues to slip out, I would call immediately and

see if your Dr. or () can help you troubleshoot.

Is the right foot the clubfoot? Does Ben have bilateral clubfeet?

Ben has bilateral clubfeet and since sending the origional message

his foot has come out quite a few times. I will try what you have

suggested and if it's still the same tomorrow I will go back to the

hospital.

Many thanks

That's very odd that he slips out, all I can think of is that either

he's not fully corrected or the straps aren't tight enough. Tight,

tight, tight... if you need new holes punched in the leather, do

it. They should fit nice and snug, tongue under the straps straight

(flat) at the attachment point and the heel as deeply into the back

as possible. Lie his foot into the open shoe and point his toes a

bit. Hold the foot into the back of the shoe and pull the tongue

over as far as it'll go nice and flat (on top of the rubber on the

other side if needed). hold the tongue firmly and pull the middle

strap very tight. If the tongue buckles, re-adjust it to keep it

flat. Then do the top and toe straps nice and tight. When they're

on, pull at the heel to see if the foot slips. If it does, they're

not tight enough and you will need to re-tighten. Do this as many

times as needed to keep the foot in the shoes.

Do you happen to have pictures of his foot and also him wearing the

brace? If you don't have them already, but can do it maybe you could

take pictures today so we can help you troubleshoot what's going on.

Take these pictures:

1 - directly from front and back bearing weight (help him stand) on a

hard surface (no carpet). (1 each, directly from front and also one

from the back)

2 - The soles of his feet

3 - From the side (profile) use your palm to push his toes as far up

towards his head as possible (dorsiflexion).

4 - one each from the outsides with him bearing weight on hard surface.

5 - one of him wearing his brace how you normally put it on. If you

can get some closeups of the shoes themselves (while on baby) that'd

help too.

6 - one with you holding the brace up to his shoulders (to check bar length).

We have a picture list where you can send these pictures as

attachments in an email. go to

www.health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFPics/ to subscribe. An email

will be sent to the addy you subscribed under. Please read the

attached file and complete the short survey at the end. Copy and

paste into a reply to that email and answer the questions. If you

have troubles, let me know.

hope things improve today, just remember to get them very

tight. Really, tight is what works even if it seems too much. Any

shoe can cause sores/blisters if they're not tight enough, even the PM's.

Kate,

I'm a bit baffled by this, you said he is in the shoes, not

the Markells right? I've not heard of babies being able to slip out

of the s -- they're the ones that look sort of like

Birkenstock sandals with 3 straps. If he is slipping out of those I

would definitely think that there is a problem with his correction or

the size of the shoe. Who is his doctor and can you tell us a little

about his foot? Can he put his foot flat on the ground? Does he

have good dorsiflexion (pushing up with your palm on the bottom of

his foot you should be able to get 10-15 degrees of flex (or more)?

Let us know a bit more about yours and Ben's situation and we'll see

if we can't help you get this worked out.
