Everyone - re wetsuits. Having done a ton of research on this

subject (we live 7 blocks from the Pacific Ocean in southern

California), I learned that it is important to ask/find out these

questions:

a) is the wetsuit for pool swimming or ocean swimming.

If it is for pool swimming, than any " off-the-rack " wetsuit would

probably be fine, because even though it won't fit properly in all

spots, the pool water isn't super cold.

If it is for ocean swimming, determine the time of year the child will

be swimmming in general, and what the average water temp is. With

ocean swimming, most of us will need to have a CUSTOM wetsuit made.

This is because the wetsuit has to fit snugly against all parts of the

body, with NO gaps or poofing in the material around the body.

There are different thicknesses of wetsuits. Here in the Pacific

Ocean, which is cold, needs a 3mm and a full-length wetsuit

because she swims often year round, and stays in the water for hours.

I will tell you this -- before she started using a wetsuit, she

lasted, on average 12-15 minutes in the Pacific Ocean before lips were

blue and body was uncontrollable shaking.

With her new wetsuit, which was made for her body size, she can stay

in for 5 hours at a time, never cold. It is a pain to get her into

it (for full body, zippers at the wrists and ankles are key), but she

LOVES it. She hated that she could never swim in the ocean like her

friends.

So.... if you live near the ocean and want an ocean wetsuit, email

me!!! Body Glove and the others no longer make custom wetsuits, but

they gave me the info of the company that used to do their designing

(they go cheaply overseas now), and the company is in our town. They

measure about 10 or so different points on the body, and then make the

suit (kids can pick out colors) and they told me that they can give

the measuring map over email to anyone.

It is not cheap, so this is only for a child who really is going to

use it regularly. They made it slightly bigger in length, so that it

has lasted us two summers. Can't remember the exact cost, but it was

somewhere around $170-$200. When you live on the ocean, and spend

most weekends there, definitely worth it so that your child can feel

normal.
