Guest guest
Tabitha, We've been through the ringer and back with our daughter who has, for the past two years, had ST, OT and PT. The ST and OT worked on feeding issues initially as she was an infant and we had to overcome sensory issues galore. We still have a few but nothing like before. They are livable at this point and I know as she gets older they will get better. Let me encourage you by saying that you are doing what is best for your son. Don't worry too much. If you have good therapists they will help you help him. Work with him at home. Do what they do. Ask questions and ask for 'homework'. Karter will improve tremendously in the process and you will grow in to a wonderfully strong Momma. We have just been bumped down to part time in OT and ST and most likely will be bumped down in PT in the next few months. It does help. is living proof. If you need to chat please feel free to contact me off list anytime. Chris OT-just one more thing well I posted yesterday about Karter's right foot being tight. Well today we had a appt. with speech and hearing people. He is delayed and will now be getting speech therapy. He also has some issues with sensory so will also being seeing a OT. I guess we will just be stronger people after this. I really wish I would have not made the appt so close together so mommy would not worry so much. If anyone has any advise or stories on speach or sensory issues I would love to chat. Can email me off list. thanks Tabitha --------------------------------- Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Guest guest
thanks for posting this. We too are embarking on a speech/sensory journey. My 12 month old gags if even the slightest crumb of anything is put in her mouth so for now she is exclusively breastfed, no solids of any kind, not even sippy cups with water as she will not accept a bottle, cup, straw, sippy, spoon, anything except for the breast and very occassionally her fingers (like I may see her put her fingers in her mouth a couple of times a week). Oh well, I'm sure it'll work out.... Marcia OT-just one more thing well I posted yesterday about Karter's right foot being tight. Well today we had a appt. with speech and hearing people. Guest guest
Marcia, I so know where you are! We've come such a long way since was 12 mos - she's now 25 mos and life is so different. Do you know about the feeding group? They have such wonderful folks who have been there, done that and were a help when we needed some suggestions. I'll be happy to answer/help/support you in any way I can as well. In case you are interested the group is at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/feeding/ . Tabitha, this could help you, too! When we started, we just had to work at getting something in her mouth. We used a pacifier and/or a baby spoon. Where she wouldn't even open her mouth before, she now puts an adult spoon all the way in her mouth even when it is full of food. We did exercises to strengthen and desensitize her mouth and cheeks and you could do some of those now, daily, several times a day. Do you have an ST or OT for this yet? Guest guest
Tabitha- has been in the First steps program here since he was 6 months old. He just began speech therapy and has had 2 sessions. He also has OT once a month and PT twice a month-speech is every week. EEK- its a hefty commitment-3 separate people-however, I love his therapists and they love him (and children in general). My only recommendation is schedule only 1 session per day-since you mentioned oT and speech-make sure they are on separate days or at least if necessary-1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon-in order to avoid baby meltdown. However, understand-its all done in the " play " form-they play and don't even realize its therapy. I had speech therapy in school for 2 years as I had a lisp-it was not as playful as what my son gets to do-he gets to play with cars and animals and read books and they just watch/listen/and encourage. Good luck and hang in there! It is a lot to take in but this too shall pass. Feel free to email me anytime you want to! kathleen mom to david 19 mo old bcf fab 12/7 > > well I posted yesterday about Karter's right foot being tight. Guest guest
hi tabitha, i am a bit in a rush so i will be brief. my daughter was also tested through EI(Early Intervention) and she is also speech delayed. I am so thankful I got her tested early. She is 2yrs old and was only speaking in one or maybe 2 word sentences. she has had 2 classes and is doing wonderful! she has now started speaking more in 2 and even 3 word sentences! we are told she is doing really well! I think you should be proud of yourself for getting him tested. We were told the early the better b/c sometimes if they are detected late it just makes it a little harder for them. So good for you, I know it is a lot to deal with but he will catch up in no time. Our speech therapist praised us for getting her checked this early so good for you. How old is your son? I know how you feel, I was the one asking everyone here on the board a couple of weeks ago about speech therapy too, so I know it is a little nerve wreaking but the people from EI are so great. I am sure you and your son will enjoy the classes. Well gotta pick up my son from school. IF you have any other questions feel free to email me!
