Speed of weight loss and dieting

Hi all, I have a question about how quickly one loses weight. My friend, who

was switched 11/8, lost 25 lbs. her first 2 weeks. This seems like a lot of

weight by anyone's standards. She has not seriously dieted for over 25

years, and then I think the diet was for only 20-30 lbs one time. I wondered

if this might be why she is losing so fast now. On the other hand, I have

dieted all of the last 25 years plus another 10. When I am finally switched,

I wonder if my metabolism is so screwed up that I will be one of the slow

losers. Has anyone noticed a correlation between the two?

Hi ks, You only had a BMI of 37 and lost that much already? That's great!

What has you dieting history been like? My friend had a BMI of 46, but she

is very short, and wants to lose between 100-120 lbs. She hit 30 lbs at 3

weeks yesterday!

Hi Pam,

You didn't give height or starting weight for your friend, so it is

difficult to say whether or not the 25lbs is fast or slow. It all

depends, anyway. There is no hard-and-fast rule about the speed of

loss, especially when it comes to the first month. There is a lot of

water/fluid gained and lost in the first month. If your friend only

has to lose 100lbs, the 25lbs (assuming most of it is NOT water)

might be too fast, but who knows? If her doc thinks it's okay, it's

okay.

I think a great many of us have been on perpetual diets, but the

surgery still works. Good luck!
