I think I would get a PT eval. It can't hurt and it can only ease your mind. I would just call and ask the pediatrician for a referral. If they refuse to give it to you, that is another reason to switch pediatricians. Where do you live? My daughter was in PT for about 6 months. I LOVED her PT. He convinced me to go forward with the first and second DOC bands. She no longer has torticollis! Also, make sure you go to a pediatric PT! I had to fight to get the one I wanted. I went to a PT with my son, 3 years ago who obviously didn't see kids at all, so I learned my lesson. Even if you have to drive to see a PT that specializes in children, it is so worth it!

Hi,I am thinking it is time to have 's neck evaluated more thoroughly. The most concerned so far other than me has been the chiropractor and all she says is his neck is a little off and then she adjusts it. was never diagnosed with torticollis and I am fairly confident he never had it. (Thinking back, I think my 5.5 year old had mild torticollis that led to his plagio.) has a preference to turn right, especially when sleeping, but he never had a head tilt. He is able to turn both directions. He just turns right more than left. When he is sleeping on his back, he sometimes turns so far that his chin is to his shoulder. I had noticed it less since he started the chiropractor visits last May. However, lately it has regressed. This may be because he started daycare in Jan and he will only nap there sitting up! He sleeps in a low rocking chair at daycare. When the teachers try

to lay him down, he wakes up. We are surprised that he refuses to nap like the other kids. This has me very worried about his neck. Besides when we remove the helmet, I would prefer he did not favor sleeping on his flat spot. For those of you taking your children for neck therapy, who diagnosed the neck problems? Was it the pediatrician? Should I see a physical therapist? Are there neck specialists? We are in the process of switching pediatricians. The old one wasn't concerned about the neck, but then I am switching because of her casual attitude about multiple things, including the head. Should I take into the new pediatrician before his next scheduled check up, which isn't until June? Any advise on what to do about the neck? Thanks in advance. I don't know what I would do without this group during this difficult time.BTW, I'm so relieved to finally being switching pediatricians! It is

mentally a tiny bit of closure to this plagio ordeal. Thanks,Kathy, mom to almost 21 months, almost 9 months in Starband

My dd was diagnosed by our ped... but I had to do my own research and

bring it up and ask about tort before she got a dx.

And acually, my dd's tort wasn't the classic muscle tort, her's is

actually a structural asymmetry in her skull base and irregularities in

her spinal cord.

You can learn alot about tort just by googlng. You can find alot of

pictures, illustrations and descriptions of tort.

Kathy,

Our chiro says that it is common for little ones to keep having their neck go out of alignment because they are so active. Have you asked your chiro whether he is concerned that it is more than typical? If so, does he think it's a spinal alignment issue or a muscular issue? I ask because the chiro is the best treatment if it is the spine and the PT is the best if it is something else. If it's the spine, then perhaps he just isn't holding between appointments. needed 3 times a week appointments for about 2 months before she started holding at all.

It probably wouldn't hurt to get a PT eval if you are concerned. also tended to sleep more on her right side when she was younger but her head was never tilted much. And, she didn't resist my attempts to reposition her on her left side. Unfortunately, the repositioning moved her from plagio to brachy, but that's another story. Anyway, having had a full PT eval, I know that I don't need to be worried about any kind of tort because the PT would have found it. So, if it would ease your mind, ask for the referral and look for a pediatric PT.

I think you are right to be concerned about sleeping in the chair, weather there is a neck issue or not sleeping bent neck is not good. I think an eval with a pediatric PT would be a good idea. For my son I had to ask the ped about it and she referred us to a PT, the first of which was not a pediatric one, the next one we saw was and there was a big difference in the abiltity to help him in our case.btw, I am trying to change peds for the very same reasons , very frustrating! good luck with your new one!le 9mosFrom: Kathy Lora Jensen <kathylorajensen@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Wed, February 24, 2010 4:56:50 PMSubject: Neck advise please

Hi,

That is interesting.  My son had internal skull base asymmetries.

My husband takes my son to an osteopath.   My understanding is that the

osteopath believes the root cause of my son's plagio is that he was

born with internal skull base asymmetries.  It is so odd that according

to our memory and all pictures, my son had no plagio at even 3 to 4

months.  That is our pediatrician's recollection too since she actually

refers babies on for helmets, but she stopped checking for plagio after

the 4 month visit.

Hi,

Thanks.  I'll ask the chiro the next visit.  I know she adjusts 's

neck and then it is out again by the next visit.  Lately it has been

worse I believe because was sleeping upright in the chair at

daycare.  Good news is the teacher told me started sleeping lying

down in the chair.  's head never tilted much either.  ('s

did for about the first month.)  's head turns right more than

left.  We didn't notice for many months because we were watching for a

tilt like had.  I thought 's neck was in great shape.  We

tried to reposition since birth, but that meant rotating his head

postition so we actually put him on his bad side part of the time. :|(

It is all so frustrating!

I'm going to search for a pediatric PT just to be safe.

Thanks,

Kathy, We've been seeing a pt at Lucile packard children's hospital. She is great. We have palo alto medical as our HMO group and pediatric pt is through Lucile packard. I know this is somewhat in your area. It was our pt that gave us the info about cirs and why we even got the helmet in the first place. DianeMom to STARband since Oct.
